Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has offered an update on Barcelona’s pursuit of Philippe Coutinho and it looks like Liverpool have successfully held on to their playmaker.

Coutinho has been strongly linked with a move to the Nou Camp after Barca identified the Liverpool star as a key target following Neymar’s world record move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Catalans have been using every dirty trick in the book to try and get a deal agreed but Liverpool have stood firm and refused to sell despite Coutinho handing in a formal transfer request.

The Daily Star claim that after already rejecting offers of £72m and £92m, Liverpool knocked back Barcelona’s third bid worth £113m on Friday and ignored their self-imposed deadline of 7pm on Sunday to agree a deal.

Balague has now offered an update on the saga and the Sky Sports pundit claims Barcelona have been forced to END their interest in Coutinho and turn their attention to other targets such as Jean-Michael Seri, Ousmane Dembele and Angel Di Maria.

The Spanish football expert Tweeted:

If true, this news will be met with jubilation by Liverpool fans as they’ve seemingly successfully fended off interest from one of the biggest clubs in the world and hung on to a key player.

Obviously there is still time for Barcelona to renew their interest and launch a fourth bid but I don’t think it will make any difference as Liverpool have made it clear Coutinho won’t be sold at any price this summer.

It’s now going to be interesting to see how the Brazilian international is integrated back in to the Liverpool squad as we’ve seen reports suggesting he’s refusing to train and doesn’t want to play for the club again.

However, things change quickly in football and I’m sure the situation will be solved amicably once the transfer window is finally closed at the end of the month.

It looks like this particular saga is over…..for now at least.
