Anthony Martial wants to stay at Manchester United and fight for his first team place despite reported interest from Arsenal, according to the Mirror.

Martial has enjoyed a mixed time of things since joining United from Monaco in 2015 as he excelled during his debut campaign when he scored 17 goals under former boss Louis van Gaal.

The 21-year-old then struggled to make an impact during Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge but has rediscovered his best form this campaign having provided 5 goals and 6 assists in his 9 appearances so far.

However, despite his encouraging form, Martial has still not managed to nail down a regular first team place as he’s started just one Premier League game this term with Marcus Rashford sharing the duties on the left wing.

It’s led to speculation over Martial’s long-term future and the Express carried a report over the weekend that claimed Arsenal had seen an opening offer knocked back by United for his signature.

Arsene Wenger is on the look-out for a replacement for Alexis Sanchez – who’s expected to join Man City either in January or in the summer – and it seems the Gunners boss has identified Martial as a potential target.

However, it looks like Wenger will have to look elsewhere as the Mirror are citing a report from the Manchester Evening News that claims Martial wants to remain at United and fight for his place.

The newspaper says the French international is happy at Old Trafford and he seems to be winning over Mourinho after the United boss heaped praise on the attacker late last month.

Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Mirror:

“I see a great improvement in the person [Martial], in the mood, in the face, in the body language. If you want just a word, in the happiness. He’s a happy guy, he’s working extremely well. He starts matches, he tries to do well.

“He goes from the bench, even if it is for 10 minutes like in the last match at home, he tries to enjoy and try to give something in these extra minutes. I am very pleased with his attitude overall and then it’s easier to play well.”

Even if Martial was open to the idea of joining Arsenal, I don’t think there is a chance Mourinho would sanction a deal with his old foe Wenger so I can’t see anything coming of the rumours.
