Liverpool and Manchester United are showing a keen interest in signing midfielder Victor Wanyama this summer after he lost his first team place at Tottenham, according to the Daily Mail.

Wanyama made his name in Scotland at Celtic and further enhanced his reputation during a three-year spell at Southampton before earning a move to Tottenham in the summer of 2016.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a solid first season in north London but has struggled to force his way back in to Mauricio Pochettino’s first team plans since returning from an injury that kept him out for the first half of the campaign.

The Kenyan international has started just 4 games so far this season with only 1 coming in the Premier League as he’s been forced in to a substitutes role with Eric Dier the preferred option in the defensive midfield role.

Wanyama did remind Pochettino what he’s capable of after coming off the bench to score a stunning goal during Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield earlier this month.

It seems Wanyama’s situation has alerted rival clubs in the Premier League as the Daily Mail claim Liverpool and Man Utd are monitoring things closely ahead of potential summer swoops.

Jurgen Klopp is in the market for midfield reinforcements as Emre Can’s contract is due to expire in June and he’s no closer to signing an extension so Wanyama could be viewed as a potential replacement.

Jose Mourinho is also expected to sign at least one defensive midfielder this summer as Michael Carrick is retiring while Marouane Fellaini is also set to leave on a free transfer and Wanyama is seemingly on his radar.

It remains to be seen how Tottenham will respond to any interest from Liverpool or United in Wanyama but TeamTalk claim the duo are ready to test their resolve with £80m offers.

Daniel Levy is known to be a shrewd operator in the transfer market so the Spurs chairman could be tempted to cash-in on Wanyama and use the money to further strengthen the squad.
