After a convincing 3-0 victory at Upton Park at the weekend was followed up by the elimination of Leeds United in the FA Cup on Wednesday night, Arsenal have a favourable run of matches until Barcelona to make a serious run for the Premier League title – but how will they fare?

This weekend Arsenal host Wigan Athletic in the Premier League, going into the weekend 2 points behind leaders Manchester United as they sit in 3rd place. On paper this is a comfortable win for the Gunners. The bookmakers have them as 1/4 favourites and the form book is also in the home sides favour. However, you can throw the form book out of the window when it comes to Wigan; the Latics have been one of the most inconsistent sides in the Premier League under Roberto Martinez.

Last Meeting with Wigan

Following Arsenal’s thrashing of Chelsea on boxing day, we were all expecting Arsenal to go to the DW Stadium on a Wednesday night at the end of the year and pick up 3 comfortable points. It was looking that way too; 2-1 and a man up late on following Charles N’Zogbia’s red card, but a late disaster for Sebastien Squillaci meant Arsenal only came away with 1 point.

Manchester United host Birmingham City in a 3 o’clock kickoff, the same as Arsenal. After that, Manchester City go to Aston Villa in the Premier League’s Saturday evening game. There is every chance the top 3 will take 3 points this weekend.

Favourable Run-In

After that, Arsenal’s run in for the Premier League title is a lot easier than their two rivals on paper. And with the Gunners facing Barcelona in the second round of the Champions League, there is every chance Manchester United will have to deal with extra European games than their London rivals. Anyone else believe the two legs versus Bayern Munich cost Manchester United the Premier League last season? There’s hope for Arsenal.

Following Arsenal’s match with Wigan, they host Ipswich Town in the second leg of their Carling Cup semi final in a run of 4 straight home games. That game should not require too many first team regulars. But the option to do is there with their game next weekend behind a home tie versus League 1 side Huddersfield Town in the 4th round of the FA Cup. Arsenal are odds-on to remain in all 4 competitions at the start of February. Not bad.

After 2 cup ties, it’s Everton in the Premier League on the 1st day of February. I tend to have more faith in the home side during midweek games, as if Arsenal needed any additional advantage going into this match with a side currently sitting 12th in the table. Patience will be key against a side likely to line up in a 4-5-1 formation on the night.

Newcastle United (away), Wolves (home) and Stoke City (home) follow next in the league, before only their second away trip in the month of February, at heated rivals Tottenham. Their only other fixture against a top 5 side is at home to Manchester United at the end of April. The significant difference between the two sides fixtures gives us every reason to say that Arsenal should be the current favourites to win the Premier League! But this is Arsenal and they have a reputation for dropping points inexplicably.
