EFL clubs to ‘crimp the D’ in celebration of partnership with Ginsters
Fans awoke to the news this morning that every EFL ground will be crimping their penalty box D for the opening game of the 2018/19 campaign
It’s April Fool’s Day so we should expect to see plenty of weird and wacky stories circulating in the media but this one takes the biscuit – or pasty, in this case.
Fans awoke to the news this morning that every English Football League ground have agreed to crimp their penalty box D for the opening game of the 2018/19 campaign when the new season kicks off in early August.
The unusual alteration was to celebrate the iconic Cornish Pasty in honour of Ginsters of Cornwall – who are the official Savoury Pastry Partner the English Football League.
The pasty has been a part of Britain’s diet since the 13th century when it was eaten by the upper classes but it was the mining industry in the 19th century that really made the pasty a part of Cornish family life.
Miners took the pasties down the mines for a mid-morning snack and the distinctive D shape came about as miners used the crust as a handle to stop them from contaminating the food.
Now-a-days, it’s not just people from Cornwall who enjoy a Cornish pasty as Ginsters sell 800,000 pasties a week in supermarkets, shops and football grounds across the entire United Kingdom.
It looked like we were going to be seeing giant pasties decorating penalty boxes up and down the country at the start of next season and photos like the one above had some people convinced.
A statement was even released to the press claiming that following discussions with the EFL, all 36 football league clubs playing at home on 4/5 August 2018 will be ‘crimping the D’ in celebration of their partnership with Ginsters.
However, unfortunately for all you pasty fans, this stunt turned out to be nothing more than another cruel April Fool’s joke so there will be no giant pasty shaped D’s donning EFL grounds at the start of next season.
Good one guys, what will you come up with next year?!
