Liverpool are looking to hijack Manchester United attempts to sign Gareth Bale after opening talks with Real Madrid over a potential £78.3m deal, according to reports in Spain via TeamTalk.

Bale forged a reputation as one of the best players in the world during his time at Tottenham Hotspur which earned him a big-money move to Madrid in the summer of 2013.

The 28-year-old has provided 81 goals and 59 assists in his 181 appearances to help Madrid win a whole host of top honours including 3 Champions League trophies in the last five years.

However, Bale’s future at the Bernabeu is in serious doubt as strong speculation in recent months has suggested Madrid are ready to cash-in due to the players constant injury problems.

The Welsh international has been hampered by a number of niggling injuries over the past two seasons and has struggled to force his way back in to Zinedine Zidane’s starting eleven on a permanent basis since returning to fitness in the new year.

It’s led to rumours that Bale will be on the move this summer with a return to England on the cards as TeamTalk reported last week that Manchester United were in negotiations with Madrid.

Jose Mourinho is expected to strengthen his squad this summer as he looks to build a side capable of competing with Man City and Bale would certainly add a spark that’s been missing at times this season.

However, it looks like United will face stiff competition as TeamTalk are now citing reports from Don Balon that claim Liverpool have also opened talks with Madrid about a potential £78.3m deal.

The Spanish publication suggests the Merseysiders are ready to offer Bale a lucrative contract worth £300,000-a-week to make a move to Anfield if they can get a deal agreed with Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp is in the market for attacking reinforcements as he failed to sign a replacement for Philippe Coutinho in January and it looks like the Liverpool boss has lined-up Bale as the man he wants.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but the report says the former Tottenham star is willing to join Liverpool if a deal can’t be agreed with United so it looks like we could see Bale back in the Premier League next season.
