Manchester United have submitted a formal £50m offer for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred as Jose Mourinho kick-starts his summer transfer business, according to a report by TeamTalk.
Mourinho has endured a frustrating campaign and he knows he needs to revamp his squad if United are to compete with the likes of Manchester City for top honours next season.
Widespread reports this morning suggest that United bosses are ready to back Mourinho in the market this summer and midfield has become a priority area that needs to be resolved.
Michael Carrick will retire at the end of the season while Marouane Fellaini is expected to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in June after failing to agree terms over an extension.
There has also been growing speculation surrounding the future of Paul Pogba with TeamTalk claiming that Mourinho is willing to cash-in on the French international if an offer worth around £87m came in from abroad.
It means United need to bring in at least two midfielders this summer and Fred has emerged as a prime target in recent months after impressing with Shakhtar Donetsk since joining the club from Internacional in 2013.
The 25-year-old’s excellent form has seen him break in to the Brazilian national team set-up and he’ll be hoping to secure his place in their squad for this summers World Cup finals in Russia.
It seems Mourinho has now formalised his interest in Fred and is hoping to get a deal wrapped-up quickly as TeamTalk are citing a report from the Mirror that claims United have tabled a £50m offer.
The newspaper says Victor Wanyama was Mourinho’s first choice target but United have moved for Fred as they feel the Kenyan international will be too difficult to sign due to Tottenham’s tendency to play hardball.

Shakhtar should be far easier to deal with as the Ukrainian champions are expected to cash-in on Fred this summer so no doubt they’ll be tempted by United’s reported £50m bid.
