Arsenal To Wrap-Up 4th Signing: £25m Fee & Contract Agreed + Medical Details Leaked
Lucas Torreira has been tipped to join Arsenal this summer but now his own father has all-but confirmed the deal will go through after the World Cup.
The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are on the verge of signing Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria…
Lucas Torreira has been widely tipped to join Arsenal from Sampdoria this summer but now his own father has all-but confirmed the deal will go through after the World Cup.
Unai Emery has been wasting no time revamping the squad he inherited from Arsene Wenger with goalkeeper Bernd Leno, right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner and centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos all arriving in recent weeks.
However, the Spaniard is also in the market for a defensive midfielder as neither Granit Xhaka nor Aaron Ramsey are capable of protecting the back four and Torreira has emerged as a prime target in recent weeks with widespread reports suggesting Arsenal are closing-in on a deal to sign the South American.
The Sun reported recently that a £25m fee has already been agreed with Sampdoria and personal terms over a four-year contract have also been settled on with Torreira’s representatives so all that remained was for the midfielder to undergo his medical.
The 22-year-old’s father has now revealed that Arsenal asked for the medical to be done in Russia but Torreira chose to delay things as he wanted to concentrate on representing Uruguay at the World Cup with any distractions.
It’s worked as Torreira has been a revelation in Russia after putting in some excellent performances at the heart of the Uruguay midfield and some fans were concerned our proposed deal could be hijacked by a rival club.

However, Ricardo Torreira insists his son will complete his switch to Arsenal after the World Cup as they have given us their word and are satisfied with the terms we’ve put on the table.
Torreira senior is quoted as saying by Football London:
“Arsenal offered to do the medical in Russia but we decided against it because we felt it was inconvenient, it was not the right time”
“It is as good as a fact that Lucas will join Arsenal. There are many clubs who contacted us but we have given our word to Arsenal. We are very satisfied with what they offered.
“The deal is virtually done and only Lucas’ arrival is remaining.”
Uruguay are set to face France in the quarter finals on Friday so if they crash out of the tournament Torreira will be free to finally undergo his medical and complete his move to the Emirates to become Emery’s fourth summer signing.
The tough tackling star should be an excellent addition to the squad as he’s been one of the best defensive midfielders in Italy since joining Sampdoria two years ago and has all the attributes we’ve lacked in the middle of the park in recent seasons.
