Manchester United have been cleared to push ahead with a deal for Mateo Kovacic after Manchester City baukled at Real Madrid’s £80m asking price, according to reports via TeamTalk.

Jose Mourinho has already snapped-up three new players this summer but the United boss is expected to dip back in to the transfer market over the coming weeks as he looks to build a squad capable of competing with Manchester City for the title next season.

It looked like the Manchester giants were set for a battle off the pitch with widespread reports suggesting both United and City had registered their interest in signing Kovacic this summer after the midfielder expressed his frustration at Madrid.

However, United have been given a clear run at the Croatian international as TeamTalk are citing a report from Sky Sports that claims City have withdrawn from the race after baulking at Madrid’s £80m asking price.

It remains to be seen whether United will be prepared to match that valuation as it’s certainly a lot of money for a player who’s been on the fringes of the Madrid first team since arriving from Inter Milan in 2015.

Kovacic has struggled to hold down a regular place in recent years and made just 10 La Liga starts last season with Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro keeping him out of the side.

Understandably, Kovacic has grown tired of his bit-part role at the Bernabeu and he confirmed earlier this month that he’s ready to leave this summer in search of regular action. Kovacic is quoted as saying by the Sun:

“I want to play more and the best thing is to leave Madrid. I love football and being on the pitch, I want the opportunity to be a starter for another team.

“I’ve been in Madrid for three years and I have not played too much and that’s something that has affected my status in the national team. It’s something that does not make me happy, that’s why it’s best to change teams.”

The 24-year-old was considered to be one of the most talented young midfielders in Europe during his time at Milan and he has bags of potential so no doubt Mourinho is tempted to try and lure him to Old Trafford.

Kovacic was part of the Croatian squad that made it to the World Cup final and has won a number of trophies at Madrid so he has plenty of experience for a player of his age.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but now that City have withdrawn their interest, it seems United are now in pole position to sign Kovacic if he wants to resurrect his career here in England.
