Manchester United have opened preliminary talks to sign Jerome Boateng and Bayern Munich are prepared to do business if £53m is put on the table, according to reports in Germany via TeamTalk.

Jose Mourinho has been relatively quite in the transfer market so far this summer as he’s only signed third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant, young full-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred – who’s the only one of the new recruits that’s expected to be a first team regular this season.

However, Mourinho is expected to be active before the window closes on August 9th and a new centre-back is reportedly on the agenda as doubts continue over Chris Smalling and Phil Jones while the likes of Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo have been linked with moves this summer.

It’s led to speculation linking United with a number of top class defenders and Boateng has been one of those touted as a potential target with various reports in recent weeks suggesting Mourinho is keen to lure him to Old Trafford.

It seems United have now stepped-up their pursuit as TeamTalk are citing a report from Kicker that claims the Red Devils have opened initial talks to sign the German international from Bayern Munich.

Boateng has been at the Allianz Arena since arriving from Manchester City in 2011 and he’s won a whole host of honours including 6 Bundesliga titles, 4 domestic cups and the Champions League during his time in Germany.

However, the 29-year-old is now expected to seek a new challenge and Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed earlier this month they are ready to cash-in if a suitable offer arrives.

It looks like United are now pushing to secure a deal and Kicker, via TeamTalk, says Bayern are ready to cash-in if £53m is put on the table this summer but the Manchester giants will face competition as PSG are also showing a keen interest.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Boateng would be an excellent signing for United if they can get a deal done as he’s been one of the best centre-backs in world football over the past five years.
