Toby Alderweireld is determined to join Manchester United but Tottenham’s £75m valuation has so far priced him out of a move this summer, according to the Mirror.
United are in the market for another centre-back as Jose Mourinho looks to try and bring in at least one more new signing before the transfer window closes on August 9th with the Portuguese coach admitting his frustration at the clubs lack of activity so far.
Man Utd have been linked with the likes of Leicester City’s Harry Maguire and Barcelona’s Yerry Mina in recent weeks but their interest in Alderweireld has been well documented in the media for several months with widespread reports suggesting Mourinho is keen to lure him to Old Trafford.
The Mirror claim Alderweireld is desperate to join United and will snub all offers from elsewhere in order to secure a move to the Manchester giants, even if it means he’s got to run his contract down over the next 12 months.
The newspaper says Tottenham are open to selling before the window closes but so far they’ve refused to lower their £75m – a figure United aren’t willing to meet given Alderweireld’s complex contract situation.
The Belgian international has just one year left on his current deal and Spurs have the open to trigger a one-year extension but that new contract would include a release clause allowing the 29-year-old to leave for just £25m next summer.
Alderweireld has refused to sign a new deal at White Hart Lane so Tottenham risk losing him on the cheap in 12 months time unless they manage to find an agreement with Manchester United to sell him at a decent price over the coming week.
Spurs are still demanding big money for the Belgian star as Alderweireld has been one of the best defenders in Europe since joining the north Londoners from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015.

It’s going to be interesting to see if the two clubs can find an agreement before the start of the season but Alderweireld appears determined to secure a move to Man Utd one way or another.
