Premier League returns this weekend and Tottenham Hotspur kick-off the 2018/19 campaign with a trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino didn’t manage to bring in any new signings this summer but the Tottenham manager expressed his delight at keeping his squad together with no key players leaving.

However, the Spurs boss could see his squad stretched this weekend as an update on confirmed the north Londoners will be without at least six players for the trip to the north east to face Newcastle.

Victor Wanyama has stepped up his recovery from a knee injury that’s hampered him since last season by working in the gym this week but the Kenyan international won’t be available this weekend.

Erik Lamela is suffering from a muscle injury and will also miss the Newcastle game but the good news it’s only a minor issue so the Argentinean international shouldn’t be on the sidelines for long.

Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is out with a groin injury while fellow centre-back Juan Foyth is also still working his way back to full fitness from a thigh injury so both are unavailable on Saturday.

Midfielder Harry Winks has returned to full training following a long-term ankle injury but the Magpies game will come too soon while Josh Onomah is also set to miss out with a knee problem.

So six of Tottenham’s fringe players have been ruled out but Pochettino is also sweating on the fitness of several of his first team regulars after many returned back late to pre-season following their exploits at the World Cup.

The likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen, Kieran Trippier and Hugo Lloris only started their pre-season training over the past two weeks but Pochettino is hopeful they will be able to play some part against Newcastle on Saturday.
