Lyon manager Bruno Genesio has admitted Nabil Fekir is struggling to readjust to life back in France after seeing his £60m move to Liverpool collapse earlier this summer, according to quotes in the Evening Standard.
Fekir became one of the hottest properties in Europe after providing 23 goals and 8 assists last season to help Lyon qualify for the Champions League and his form earned him a place in the France World Cup squad.
The 25-year-old’s potential caught the attention of Liverpool and Fekir was widely expected to complete a move to Anfield after a deal was agreed between the two clubs shortly before the World Cup in early June.
Images even emerged online of Fekir posing in his Liverpool kit ahead of a formal announcement, however, the proposed deal sensationally collapsed at the 11th hour due to concerns over an old knee injury that was flagged up during his medical.
Liverpool contained to be linked with the French international throughout the summer with some reports suggesting Jurgen Klopp would resurrect the deal while Chelsea were also touted as potential suitors during the closing stages of the window.
However, a move failed to materialise before the window slammed shut and Lyon boss Bruno Genesio has admitted Fekir is struggling to come to terms with the fact he didn’t join Liverpool this summer.
Genesio is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard:
“It is never easy accepting this kind of situation, when you are very near to signing for a club where you want to go. Where you want to reach another level and to give a boost to your career.”
“But as I said, it could have been worse for him. He is at Lyon, at a strong club, he is captain of a team who plays in the Champions League.”
Fekir is yet to feature for Lyon this season as he’s still working his way back to full fitness following an extended post-World Cup break but it will be interesting to see how he performs in Ligue 1 this campaign.

Liverpool didn’t sign another attacking midfielder this summer so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Fekir-to-Liverpool rumours start again ahead of the January window and who knows, he might just get his dream move to Anfield afterall.
