Liverpool star Joe Gomez will miss crunch games against Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City after being ruled out for six weeks with a fractured leg.

Gomez started for Liverpool during the 3-1 comeback win over Burnley last night but was stretchered off midway through the first half after colliding with the advertising hoardings that surround the pitch at Turf Moor.

The 21-year-old was replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 23rd minute and Jurgen Klopp admitted after the game on Wednesday night that he feared Gomez was facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering what appeared to be a serious injury.

Those fears have now been realised as Liverpool have announced on their official website that after assessing Gomez at Melwood today, it’s been confirmed he’s sustained a fracture to his lower leg.

The club’s medical department expect the England international to be ruled out for around six weeks – although the exact time-frame will depend on how his rehabilitation goes over the coming weeks.

The statement on Liverpoolfc.com said:

Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez sustained a fracture to the lower left leg during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday night.

Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday.

Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though it’s dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.

The news will come as a huge blow to Liverpool as Gomez has been a key part of Klopp’s side this season having made 18 appearances in all competitions so far and has struck-up an impressive partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

Gomez to miss crucial games

If he’s ruled out for the entire six weeks, the defender will miss nine games starting with Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth. Gomez will then sit out the crucial Champions League tie with Napoli next week and the visit of Manchester United to Anfield the following weekend.

The former Charlton youngster will then miss league games with Wolves and Newcastle before sitting out the huge double-header with Arsenal and Manchester City over the New Year period.

Gomez is also expected to miss the FA Cup third round trip to Wolves while the game with Brighton on January 12th may also come too soon meaning he could target a comeback against Crystal Palace on the 19th if his recovery goes smoothly.

Klopp must now decide how best to cope without Gomez over the coming weeks with Dejan Lovren favourite ahead of Joel Matip to partner van Dijk in the middle of Liverpool’s back four.
