Some Manchester United fans have savaged Phil Jones on social media after he scored a comedy own goal during their Champions League defeat to Valencia.

Jose Mourinho made several changes to his starting eleven for the final group game as Man Utd had already secured safe passage to the knockout stages of the competition.

Jones was one of the few players who retained his place from the side that beat Fulham 4-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League last weekend but the centre-back had a night to forget in Spain.

The 26-year-old looked vulnerable all night and was partly at fault for Valencia’s opening goal as his poor header fell straight to Carlos Soler who fired home for 1-0 in the 17th minute.

However, things got a whole lot worse for Jones shortly after half-time as he scored a calamitous own goal to gift Valencia a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute as he poked the ball past Sergio Romero from the edge of the area.

United pulled one back when Marcus Rashford came off the bench to reduce the deficit with an 87th minute header but the hosts held on to seal a 2-1 win at the Mestalla.

The horror-show from Jones prompted a number of Man Utd fans to destroy the defender on social media with some labelling him a ‘clown’, a ‘joke’ while some demanded he leaves the club as soon as possible.

The defeat in Spain came at a cost as with Juventus surprisingly losing to Young Boys in Switzerland, Man Utd missed out on the opportunity to finish top of the table and get a more favourable draw in the last-16.
