Tottenham and Liverpool in battle to sign 22-year-old international star

Tottenham and Liverpool are in the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner but face stiff competition from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund

The January transfer window is open and managers are working hard on strengthening their squads and identifying targets for the summer so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest rumours. Today, Liverpool and Tottenham are linked with Timo Werner…

Tottenham and Liverpool are in the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner but face stiff competition from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, according to reports in Germany via 90Min.

Werner came through the youth ranks at Stuttgart before joining Leipzig in 2016 and he’s developed in to one of the best strikers in German football over the past two-and-a-half years after providing 55 goals and 20 assists in his 98 appearances so far.

The 22-year-old has continued his fine form in front of goal this campaign with 13 goals in 21 games while he’s also made his mark on the international stage having netted 9 times in his 23 caps for Germany.

Werner has caught the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs and 90min are citing a report from Sport Bild that claims Liverpool and Tottenham are showing a keen interest in bringing the hitman to the Premier League.

Liverpool have one of the most feared attacks in world football but with Dominic Solanke sold to Bournemouth and the futures of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi in doubt, Jurgen Klopp needs another top class option to compete with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Werner is seemingly on his radar.

Tottenham have also built a superb attack in north London but Mauricio Pochettino is overly reliant on Harry Kane up front as Fernando Llorente barely gets a game so Spurs could be eyeing Werner to help ease the pressure on their star man.

However, the English duo will face stiff competition from the Bundesliga as the German publication claims Bayern and Dortmund are also in the hunt to sign Werner once he decides to leave Leipzig.

The striker is under contract until 2020 so Leipzig will come under intense pressure to cash-in this summer if Werner doesn’t sign an extension over the coming months and it looks like Liverpool and Tottenham are among the clubs ready to pounce.
