David May cancels party to celebrate City’s 35th year without a trophy

May lifts the Champions League trophy in 1999

Former United defender David May has cancelled a party in Manchester City Centre on Friday night to celebrate Man City’s 35th year without a trophy. The rivalry between United and City has intensified in recent seasons with the massive cash injection City have received and the defection of Judas Carlos Tevez to the blue half of Manchester.Police have already issued warnings to both clubs ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby. May had been touting a party in the city centre the night before the match that he jokingly described as a celebration of Man City’s 35th year without a trophy.

May is involved in United Nights, an initiative which brings fans and former players together raising money for charity through admission fees to the parties and raffles for signed jerseys etc.

Advertising the event on his blog, May, commented: “The next United Night has landed perfectly, it is before the biggest game of the season, a title decider with city at Old Trafford in February. Hundreds of Reds getting together for a night they will never forget.” May went on to say, “We are also celebrating City not winning a trophy in 35 years!!! Ha Ha. See you there!!!!”

Following these comments both May and the bar at which the party was to be held received threats and as a result the event has been cancelled. May has since come out to publicly deny claims that he was taunting City insisting that his comments were meant as friendly banter.

May said: “It was never a party to celebrate City’s 35 years without winning any silverware. That mention was just a bit of banter. It’s disappointing because the majority of the proceeds were going to Christie Hospital and the United Foundation. It was an event for United fans from all over the world who were visiting for the derby. We raffle signed shirts, signed footballs and pictures and have auctions and most of the money raised goes to charity. My biggest gripe is that the charity won’t benefit now and people have jumped on the bandwagon and said I hate City which is totally wrong.”
