Manchester United are set to table an opening £49m bid for Bruno Fernandes but Sporting Lisbon are expected to hold out for a fee closer to £70m, according to reports in Portugal via the Mirror.

Fernandes has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer with various media outlets reporting that United are keen to sign the attacking midfielder after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made him a top transfer target.

Journalist Nicolo Schira – who works for Gazetta dello Sport – claimed earlier this month that Fernandes’ agent Miguel Pinho had travelled to England to hold talks with United chiefs over a potential move this summer.

It looks like Man Utd are now ready to formalise their interest as the Mirror are citing a report from O Jogo that claims the Red Devils will open the bidding at around £49m [€55m] with the offer expected to be tabled ‘within hours’.

This news supports what Times journalist Duncan Castles claims as he told the Transfer Window Podcast last week that Pinho has informed Sporting that United are ready to submit an offer for Fernandes.

New customer offer. Place 5 x €/£10 or more bets to receive €/£20 in free bets. Repeat up to 5 times to receive maximum €/£100 bonus. Min odds 1/2 (1.5). Exchange bets excluded. Full T&Cs Apply. 18+|Gamble Aware.

However, Man Utd may have to dig a little deeper as Portuguese outlet O Jogo, via the Mirror, suggest that Sporting will reject United’s £49m bid and hold out for a figure closer to their £70m valuation.

This has subsequently been confirmed by Sporting’s president Frederico Varandas as he told RTP that any offer of €55m or €62m will be rejected.

“I don’t know if there are many or if there are few [interested clubs]. What I know, a lot has been spoken of values, coming to the press, €55m, €62m… for that he doesn’t leave, for sure.”

So Man Utd still have a battle on their hands to sign Fernandes this summer but he would be an excellent signing if they could get a deal agreed as the Portuguese international contributed a staggering 32 goals and 18 assists last season.

United could certainly do with that sort of creativity in the middle of the park but we’ll have to wait and see whether the midfielder follows Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in making a move to Old Trafford this summer.
