Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has offered a positive update on David De Gea while four key men could return for the visit of Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

De Gea limped out of Spain’s Euro 2020 qualifying draw with Sweden on Tuesday night after suffering an adductor injury early in the second half and there were fears the United No.1 had picked up a serious muscle problem.

However, Solskjaer has confirmed the injury isn’t as bad as first thought so De Gea isn’t facing a long spell on the sidelines – although the Man Utd boss admits the goalkeeper is unlikely to be fit to face Liverpool this weekend so Sergio Romero is in-line to deputise between the sticks.

Solskjaer didn’t give specific updates on any of his other injured players but the Mirror claims Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jesse Lingard could all return against the league leaders.

Martial has been on the sidelines with a thigh injury for over a month while Shaw has also been nursing a hamstring injury since the defeat to Crystal Palace back in August but the duo are in full training and could feature against Liverpool.

Wan-Bissaka is expected to be back in contention after recovering from tonsillitis while Lingard has also stepped up his recovery from a thigh injury and the Mirror says the quartet will all have late fitness tests to see if they can play on Sunday.

Solskjaer is quoted by the Mirror as saying at his press conference today:

“Of course, I would like to tell you positive news, hopefully… we’ll see on Sunday who’s come through the last two sessions,”

“Because there’s players here who have just started training, just on the verge of coming back or not so I can’t really say.”

“Well, I don’t expect him [De Gea] to play. But it wasn’t as bad as feared. When I saw the game, I thought that’s him out until next international break because we’ve had some long-term muscle injuries but it’s not as bad as feared.”

Elsewhere, Paul Pogba has been ruled out with an on-going ankle injury while Phil Jones, Diogo Dalot and Mason Greenwood are major doubts so Solskjaer has plenty of injury concerns heading into a crucial game against Liverpool.

United currently sit 12th in the Premier League table and just two points above the relegation zone so Solskjaer will be praying some of his players are passed fit to face Jurgen Klopp’s side on Sunday as he looks to get their season back on track.
