Liverpool will look to cement their position at the top of the Premier League table with a win over Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds saw their winning run come to an end with a 1-1 draw at Manchester United last weekend and their lead has been cut to just three points following Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa today.

Jurgen Klopp will therefore be desperate to win their game in hand and restore Liverpool’s six-point lead at the top of the table with victory over Spurs tomorrow and they warmed-up for the game with a 4-1 win at Genk in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

However, Tottenham head to Anfield off the back of an impressive victory of their own after they thrashed Red Star Belgrade 5-0 in midweek so Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping to build some momentum with a positive result against the league leaders.

It’s been a difficult few weeks for Spurs as they picked up just one point from their last two league games against Brighton and Watford after being hammered 7-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League so the north Londoners will be keen not to leave Anfield empty handed.

Team news

Liverpool will welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold back into the squad after he missed the win over Genk through illness while Joel Matip will require a late fitness test after sitting out the last two games with a knee problem.

Xherdan Shqiri remains out with a calf injury but Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum should return to the starting eleven after being rested in midweek. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are expected to make way despite their superb performances on Wednesday night.

Tottenham have no fresh injury concerns to worry about so Hugo Lloris is Pochettino’s only absentee as the goalkeeper remains on the sidelines with a dislocated elbow.

Ryan Sessegnon is hoping to be involved in the squad for the first time since joining Tottenham in the summer after overcoming a serious hamstring injury.

Predicted score

Liverpool 3-1 Tottenham: Liverpool have an excellent record against Tottenham as they’ve lost just one of their last 13 Premier League meetings and Spurs are winless in their last eight trips to Anfield. The Mersysiders won both league games against Spurs last season and Pochettino’s men haven’t won on the road in their last 10 matches, so the stats certainly favour a home win.

Tottenham will hope the win in midweek will help them turn a corner but I just can’t see past a Liverpool victory tomorrow. Klopp’s side are formidable at Anfield and I think they’ll run out 3-1 winners this weekend.
