Could Lack of Width Cost United the League?

Man Uniteds Main Wing Man

From the Busby Babe era right up to the modern day, every successful Manchester United team has relied on wingers to provide a cutting edge to it’s attack. From George Best to Andrei Kanchelskis to Nani in todays team the aim has always been the same – get the ball wide and it in the box for the strikers to finish.

With no news yet on how long the injury suffered to Nani will keep him out for and Ji Sung Park still a few weeks away from action the natural width of the team will suffer and so too could the results. Antonio Valencia is due to return soon but it might take him a couple of games to get into the swing of things. Anderson, who can also play on the wing, is still a few weeks away as well.

Ryan Giggs days as a flying winger are in the past despite his ongoing excellence. Fletcher can do a job if needs be but he is not the type of player that takes on defenders. Rooney has also been deployed on the wings but he is better off leading the line. All this combined leaves this fan in fear! Without wingers in the team Man United are not as potent and that I’m afraid is a fact.

There is other players who could do a job on the wings if needs be. Bebe and Obertan have not exactly hugely impressed yet and I don’t think they are the answer. Rafael can beat players and so too can Fabio, who has played on the wing for the Reserves a few times, and of course he came on as a sub a couple of weeks ago at left wing and scored against Wigan.

Other options could include Ravel Morrison and Robbie Brady who are both naturally wide players but between them they only have about 2 minutes of first team experience! Hopefully Nani and Park come back sooner than expected. Maybe I am just fretting over nothing but I thought I would share my worries with you all!

What do you think? Am I fretting over nothing? Who would you like to see on the wing if the main lads aren’t there?
