Erling Haaland On Course For Record Breaking Season

erling haaland

Norway striker Erling Haaland scored 41 goals in 41 games in all competitions last season for Dortmund. The prolific goalscorer could be set to top that record in the 2021/22 campaign, based on the opening half of the season.

Haaland found the back of the net on 27 occasions in the Bundesliga last year. It was the highest total of his career, beating the 13 goals scored in his debut campaign in the German league. Unsurprisingly, he was also voted the Player of the Season in the league.

The Dortmund man proved his class in the Champions League last season. Although Dortmund were eliminated in the quarter finals by Manchester City, Haaland finished the competition as the top scorer with 10 goals. His tally was enough to be crowned the Forward of the Season for the 2020/21 Champions League campaign.

Before the winter break, Haaland had scored 13 goals in 10 Bundesliga games. His record in all competitions was even better, as he had 19 goals through 15 fixtures. So, if the Norwegian continues to remain above a goal per game, he could be set to exceed the 41 goals he scored last season.

Race With Lewandowksi For Golden Boot

The Golden Boot in the Bundesliga this season could end up being a two-horse race between Haaland and Robert Lewandowski. Like the Norway international, the Bayern Munich striker has also been in scintillating form.

As reported by the BBC, in 2021, Lewandowksi broke Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga record for the most goals in a calendar year, ending the year with 43 goals. The Polish striker finished second behind Lionel Messi in the 2021 Ballon d’Or. Many pundits in the sport felt he was very unfortunate not to seal the top prize, following the impressive 12 months he had.

Before Bayern Munich broke for the winter break, Lewandowski had found the net on 19 occasions in the Bundesliga and 30 times in all competitions. His side are in firm control at the top of the league standings.

If Haaland is to surpass Lewandowski at the end of the campaign, he will not only need to continue his own impressive strike rate, but he may also need to up it. Haaland is 11/1 to be the top goalscorer in the Bundesliga this season with bookmaker Unibet, one of the best online betting sites in Norway among LeoVegas and Casumo. This really demonstrates the belief in the players and the number of people backing them. So, it should be a fascinating battle to watch between the two prolific goal scorers.

Haaland The Complete Striker

Although all strikers are judged by the number of goals they score, it is not just Haaland’s finishing that has impressed pundits around the world. One of his best qualities is his movement. He reads the game very well, which is why he is often able to find space, particularly inside the 18-yard box. This makes him a very difficult player to defend against.

Kylian Mbappe is the benchmark set for speed as a forward and although Haaland cannot match the Frenchman, he is very fast himself. The Dortmund man scores a lot of goals after the ball is played over the top of the defence for him to run onto. Without a quick turn of foot, he would not convert as many of these chances as he does.

At 6ft3inch (1.94 metres), Haaland is a tall striker. He is very capable of scoring goals with his head. His aerial threat is something the Norwegian looks to have worked on over the last 12 months. If he ups his return from the air, his goal ratio should get even better in the future.

What Does The Future Hold For Haaland?

Haaland has been linked with a transfer from Dortmund for a number of transfer windows now. All the leading clubs in Europe are thought to be interested in his services, including Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and PSG. Unless he signs a new contract before then, his £64 million release clause is active until next summer.

Manchester City have yet to replace Sergio Aguero and could see Haaland as the perfect player to improve their squad. As the Guardian documented, they had a bid rejected for Harry Kane last summer, so it is likely they have funds aside for a striker.

It would be very interesting to see Haaland develop under Pep Guardiola, one of the best coaches in world football. He would also get lots of opportunities to score in a very talented City team which includes Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva.

Haaland may decide to stay in Germany a little longer. Dortmund continue to challenge for the Bundesliga title and they allow him the chance to perform in the Champions League.

For now, the talented striker is likely to be focussing on the second half of the campaign. If he ends it with a record-breaking season, it will make his position next summer even stronger.
