Arsenal On The Verge Of Signing German International

Arsenal have a habit of signing youngsters, youngsters such as Ramsey and Walcott, but Wenger has opted for experience and he is all set to sign the German International Per Mertesacker.

Werder Bremen chiefs have made the clearest indication so far that they are intent on selling their German defender after a fairly dodgy season for Mertesacker. The Gunners have struggled to fill the centre-back role all season, with key player Thomas Vermaelen not having played since September and French signing Sebastien Squillaci failing to impress at the Emirates.

Arsenal are set to make a bid for the defender of approximately 6 million euros. Mertesacker has only 1 year remaining in his current contract with Werder Bremen and Bremen are seemingly intent of letting go of their German defender for some cash.

Arsenal have been struggling heavily with defensive injury troubles and at some points some accidental defensive mishaps. Arsenal are to boost their back four with the arrival of the German International.

The good form shown by Johan Djourou though is however a plus point for the Gunners. Per Mertesacker already has 73 caps to his name and a wealth of top level club experience and may well be suited to the physical nature of the Premier League and could be snapped up for as little as £6m as he only has one year left on his contract.

Werder’s general manager Klaus Allofs indicated that the club aren’t prepare to lose the players on a free:

‘If you are not going to hand out an extension to an outrunning contract then you need to know all the possibilities available to you,’ he said.

‘As soon as we are aware of our fate in the Bundesliga this spring, we are going to clarify [the situation] with these contracts.

‘We will be in talks.’
