Advantage Manchester United

Rooney’s goal gives Manchester United a slender edge towards the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League last-eight tie against Chelsea.

Manchester United had Wayne Rooney to thank for after the striker netted in the winning goal for his side as the Red Devils battled to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over arch rivals Chelsea in their Champions League quarter-final first leg at Stamford Bridge.

Rooney, still not knowing what kind of punishment he will be facing for using the four-word letter against West Ham on Sunday, did not let the uncertainty affect him as he took full advantage of a superb piece of skill by his teammate Ryan Giggs to give Manchester United their first win at Stamford Bridge since 2002.

Chelsea’s £50 million signing Fernando Torres once again had a very weak and disappointing performance. He didn’t only failed to cause problems for the United defenders, but also picked up a needless injury-time yellow card for diving.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was completely amazed by Welshman Ryan Giggs’ star performance has claimed the 37-year-old veteran could still go on for a couple of years yet.

Having watched Michael Carrick deliver a pinpoint crossfield pass that was sensational in itself, Ferguson could only sit back and admire Giggs’ sublime first touch, which took him careering past the stranded Jose Bosingwa, and the coolness of his second, which left Rooney with a tap-in.

United then breathed a sigh of relief in stoppage time when they escaped a penalty. Patrice Evra obviously sent Chelsea midfielder Ramires tumbling inside the box but referee Alberto Mallenco failed to award what seemed to be a clear penalty.
