Putting Players On Pedestals Is A Dangerous Game

After Manchester United’s disappointing defeat, there were rumors that surfaced that one of their prestigious players has been deeply involved in an extra marital affair. The real surprise of this earth-shaking revelation is that the player in question is the very honorable, model citizen of Ryan Giggs, rather than the very loathsome, common media scapegoat that has become Wayne Rooney.

However the problem is, that as a supporter, we tend to forget that all of United’s players are really just average people with an above average ability, and we should not think anything more or less – even with a living football legend like Giggs.

To no real fault of theirs, supporters normally hold their heroes in the highest regard, and when a story like the one about Giggs surfaces they tend to hold him in a different light no matter of his on-the-field accomplishments.

Following his two-assist match against Chelsea, there was a lot of debate about when Giggs should be knighted for his professional proficiencies, but now those same people may be questioning his integrity because of his personal decisions. People in every walk of life, not just football, think that they are the moral police, and that they can frown upon someone else for committing a sin, but the harsh reality is that they, too, probably have skeletons in their own closets.

The saying, “people who live in glass houses should not throw stones,” applies to everyone who has committed a sin no matter which one it is. But for some reason or another, adultery is considered to be the ugliest of sins, but let’s be honest, and face the facts that, right or wrong, it happens in everyday life – especially in the football world. Last year alone, Chelsea’s John Terry and Ashley Cole, Tottenham’s Peter Crouch, along with United’s Wayne Rooney, were all guilt of infidelity, and it’s becoming more and more widespread throughout the game.

That is not to say it is right or acceptable. But these players, because of the attention they warrant, are constantly subjected to girls throwing themselves at them all the time. It takes an honest man to resist the forbidden fruit, but even some of them have given in at some point or another.

It has been well known that these kinds of women, known as floozies, throw themselves in front of sports stars in a desperate attempt to get some of their money and popularity. For every time that these players say, “yes” to these flappers, there were probably 100 times that said “no.”

Timing

Some people are surprised by the timing of the release of this controversial story, but it should not be seen as a coincidence that it broke following both of United’s recent suspensions coming to an end. It is almost certain that this did not happen last week, assuming that it did actually happen that is, so this is just another way for the press to derail United’s attempt at a successful season.

football newsThe reality star, Imogen Thomas, who rose to fame being on Big Brother decided to sell her story to the ever credible tabloid, The Sun!

With Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson’s bans both coming to an end, there is a desperate need for the media to fuel up their distaste for United, and now Giggs has supplied that with his unforeseen actions.

Comparisons

What is most incredible is that Ryan Giggs has been long compared to George Best for the way they terrorized defenders on the field, but now the can be associated off it as well.

Best, considered by many to be the greatest-ever Manchester United player, had a personal life that has not been able to be rivaled by any other footballers. What many people fail to remember or come to terms with is that Giggs had playboy lifestyle prior to marrying his wife, who knew very well about it as well.

However, since it is a player, who is usually soft spoken and mild mannered as Giggs portrays himself to be, it is frowned upon. Seen as a complete gentleman on the field, which was evident after he offered a helping hand to Terry after he was seen going AWOL in the last few minutes of United’s match against Chelsea, it seems almost unbelievable.

Whether this rumor turns out to be true or not, all of the accomplishments and glories that Ryan Giggs has contributed to for Manchester United over the last 20 years should not be tainted for his off-the-field shenanigans.
