Spurs Edge Ahead Of Arsenal In Defender Pursuit

Tottenham have joined the race to sign Bolton’s £17million rated defender Gary Cahill, but face tough competition from local rivals Arsenal and mega-rich Manchester City.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle would prefer a player plus cash deal, with the majority of the Cahill money expected to go towards reducing the clubs £90m debt.

The Sun reports that Coyle has resigned to losing his classy defender, but insists the England international will not be leaving on the cheap.

“He won’t be going on the cheap, that’s for sure.

“Gary could play for anyone and looking at a few of the deals that are going on right now, it surprises me there hasn’t been a concrete offer.”

Tottenham gaffer Harry Redknapp is set to offer Sebastien Bassong plus cash for Cahill, with an alternative of Danny Rose going to the Rebook on loan.

Rose could intrigue Coyle, who has already help progress the development of Jack Wilshire and Danny Strurridge who both excelled whilst on loan at the Rebook.
