Mata, Downing & Johnson: Assessing Liverpool’s Winger Targets

While King Kenny is out signing central midfielders, we are compiling a list of wingers that he could be interested in once he completes moves for Chalie Adam, etc.. So here’s the list!

JUAN MATA | Spanish
Age: 23

Club: Valencia

2010/11 Games: 41

Position: Striker

Value: €25m (£22m)

2010/11 Goals: 9

Very impressive and shows a great deal of maturity for a fairly young age. A winger whom possesses great crossing ability, exhilarating speed, deceptive ability and goalscoring talent. A product of Real Madrid’s youth academy, the Spaniard has gone on to shine for one of Spain’s most decorated clubs: Valencia.

Proving his worth at the U21 European Championships, where he has formed a formidable partnership with striker Adrian Lopez, for whom he has helped to score, with 2 assists in the tournament thus far (the final’s today). Plays naturally as a left winger and a player whom can surprise with a wicked shot.

Stewart Downing | English
Age: 26

Club: Aston Villa

2010/11 Games: 44

Position: Striker

Value: €21m (£19m)

2010/11 Goals: 8

A lot of questionable aspects to a potential Stewart Downing transfer to Liverpool FC. First thing would be club loyalty. He’s already forced a move from Middlesborough to Aston Villa, and he’s trying to do the same thing once again. So I personally am not a fan of these types of players.

Another thing I’m not really crazy about for this man is that he’s not pacey, he cuts in way too much. I want someone livewire down the wings, to be honest, in many aspects, I see him very much like a Joe Cole. But apart from all that, he’s got a decent cross and a great deceptive pass/shot. So I won’t exactly complain if he comes to Anfield either.

Adam Johnson | English
Age: 23

Club: Man City

2010/11 Games: 29

Position: Winger

Value: €12m (£11m)

2010/11 Goals: 8

A delightful winger when on his day, I remember when he absolutely punished Liverpool’s defence back at the start of last season with his pace and skill. But he’s one whom is really inconsistent. I’ve seen games which he has been involved with where he has been absolutely anonymous.

He fits the bill, he’s young, he’s British and he’s got bags of ability. In my opinion, he is the one that we should actually be going after in the summer.
