Liverpool Defenders Assessed: Who Should Play Centerback Next Season?

We are continuing with our post/pre-season feature on who should play for Liverpool next season. We have already done rightbacks, so today it is the centerbacks.

For this post’s purposes, Liverpool are going to play a basic 4-4-2 formation.

Centerback

Option A: Jamie Carragher

The dominant centerback who has rescued us from conceding a goal on so many occasions for the past few seasons. Although getting slightly slower with age, our vice captain still has it. Capable of a great crunching tackle along with organizing the defence and giving players huge verbal lashings. He is the glue behind our defence.

Option B: Martin Skrtel

Aah, our bald, no-nonsense Slovakian defender. Made a firm favourite among fans since his arrival in the Benitez era and one of the most frequent players you will see on the pitch, thanks to his consistency and also because he isn’t too delicate with his legs, what I mean is that he doesn’t get injured too often.

Option C: Daniel Agger

Out with injuries for a large portion of the 2010/11 season and Liverpool fans will certainly want to see more of him next season once he is back to full match fitness. A little bit too injury-prone, but a good defender and a secure passer of the ball at the back.

Option D: Martin Kelly

With him playing out at full-back so often, it is often hard to remember that he is a centerback by nature. It would be interesting to see how he copes being at the heart of the defence, he can certainly take the pressure, with him producing remarkable displays at rightback for the first half of the season prior to his injury.

Option E: Daniel Ayala

Our most untested centerback, given very little game time with Liverpool. Who knows’ next year might just be the year for him? Lots of talent, from what I’ve heard, but I strongly doubt he can breakthrough with all our talent.

Option F: Potential Transfers

Not much transfer activity for people at the centerback spot, only one notable one though, which is the Englishman Gary Cahill. I think that he would bring some more bite to our back 4.

My Combination

I think that the best combination for Liverpool is to play Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel together at centerback. It’s the most tried combo and the two get the job done very well.
