This is the 2nd part in our series to get other United Bloggers views on our transfer activity so far this season. The questions always remain the same for each blog. This week we asked top MUFC writer Dale O’Donnell from Stretty News for his thoughts.
What have you made of United’s transfer dealings so far this summer?
I’ve been impressed with everything so far, but I’m still waiting patiently for that world class midfielder. Phil Jones joined fromBlackburn for an estimated £16 million, and after watching him at the U-21 European Championship, he has a lot to learn -Smalling was immense, one of few English players that performed in the tournament. I expect to see him a lot next season giving Ferguson a chance to rest the likes of Vidic for the big games.
Ashley Young signed from Aston Villa two weeks ago after his honeymoon (before the wedding took place). The England international has been on the radar for many top European clubs, Real Madrid being one of them. He definitely has the talent to make it at United which makes me even more excited about the coming season.
David De Gea signed from Atletico Madrid last week for a fee said to be worth £20 million, which is a lot to pay for a 20-year-old goalkeeper. But when tested in the U-21 Championship, he did the business only conceding two goals before helping Spain win the tournament. De Gea has big gloves to fill and I’m extremely excited about seeing him between the sticks next season.
Can we expect more?
Is this question referring to Champions League glory by any chance? No, I don’t see us winning that next year unless Messi and a few of the Catalans put in a transfer request and join United. However, I would have said something similar this time last year and we reached the final. Ferguson continues to prove useless writers like myself wrong.
Is there a rebuilding of the squad happening?
Definitely. I don’t think United ever had three players retire in the space of one year – this year we said goodbye to Edwin Van Der Sar,Paul Scholes and former captain Gary Neville.
However, Ferguson could easily pick a back five (including the new goalkeeper) all under the age of 23: De Gea; Rafael, Smalling,Jones, Fabio. Don’t forget Evans, who has been harshly criticised after one not so good season. That shows we’re rebuilding for the future – unlike Chelsea, who I see suffering next season with players like Lampard, Terry, Essien well past their best.
Player you would most like to see at the club next season?
In my first sentence of this interview I mentioned a world class midfielder. We have heard their names all summer, e.g, Sneijder, Modric and Nasri – excuse me if I left any out. It’s hard to keep up as we’re normally linked with almost every decent player that happens to beEuropean or South American.
However, I’d most like to see Luka Modric at United, but haven’t Spurs said he won’t be sold at any price? Correct. But why should webelieve a word that comes out of Daniel Levy’s mouth – he said the same before Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov left his average club for United.
There’s not any player out there that could replace Paul Scholes, but I believe he is one of the closest out there. Fergie, sign ‘em up!
One to watch next season?
Yolkie from 7Cantonas did a very good job answering this question in the last interview, regarding Ravel Morrison. There’s no doubt Ravel has what it takes to be an extraordinary footballer, maybe a club legend. I love how he kissed the badge in front of the Kop afterscoring against the dippers in the Youth Cup. But he has to get a grip and start behaving like a professional off the pitch.
