Manager Confirms: Liverpool & Arsenal Target Is Not For Sale

By on July 9, 2011

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish remains adamant that England international Stewart Downing will not be sold this summer, despite speculation linking him with Liverpool and Arsenal.

The winger has been subject to a £15million bid from Liverpool which was immediately rejected by Villa. Arsenal interest seems to have cooled, but reports suggest Liverpool are gearing up for an improved offer for the former Middlesbrough man but McLeish confirms he has already spoke to Downing and remains confident he can keep the player at Villa Park:

“I understand why there’s teams interested in him and that is what happens when you play well consistently,” said McLeish.

“His performances last season were top drawer. That’s why he’s not for sale. The club don’t want to sell him.

“I spoke to him briefly last week and I intend speaking to him again when all the lads are back in for training.”
