Arsenal Transfer News: Two Dominant Defender’s Linked | Record Bid Reports

There has been some quite interesting and fascinating transfer rumors, gossip, news and speculation flying around the last few days surrounding the Gunners. There is one interesting piece of news regarding Arsenal’s interest in Stewart Downing. Without further ado, here is the Arsenal Transfer News Roundup.

Arsenal Interested In Mertesacker

According to several German reports, Arsenal are interested in signing German international center back, Per Mertesacker, from Werder Bremen. The Gunners have been linked with the 6’6″ German international for several seasons now, and are reportedly willing to pay 7 million pounds to sign him, who’s contract expires in 12 months time. Mertesacker is an experienced, tall and a very good defender when he’s focused and at his best.

This season, however, Mertseacker has been absolutely dreadful and was exposed numerous times for his lack of pace, which is why I’m not so keen on seeing him as a Gunner, especially as the Premier League is known for its quick pace and high tempo.

Ogbonna Interesting the Gunners

According to Italian reports, the Gunners are interested in signing Italian U-21 and Torino central defender, Angelo Ogbonna. They also state that Arsenal will have to pay up to 14 million pounds to sign him. Ogbonna is a talented defender, known for his physical presence and a solid tackler.

This season, however, Ogbonna wasn’t at his best this season and was criticized for his inconsistency and lack of concentration. Also, Ogbonna is still relatively inexperienced and I believe that the Gunners should be going for an experienced, quality defender.

Arsenal Launch Record Bid For…. Downing?

According to Sky Sports, the Gunners have launched a record bid to sign Aston Villa winger, Stewart Downing. The bid was around 18 million pounds, which breaks the record fee set for Andriy Arshavin which is around 16.5 million. However, Aston Villa have since refuted these claims.

Anyway, I honestly hope that this isn’t true, I believe that Downing is overrated and not worth 18 million, especially as it’s a record fee. Downing is inconsistent and not the player we should be going after. If we’re willing to break our transfer fee, it would’ve to be for a top quality player, and Downing doesn’t fit that bill in my opinion.

What do you think? Should Wenger go for Mertesacker or Ogbonna? Do you think that Wenger should go for Downing and that he’s worth the record fee?

Please share your thoughts and opinions.
