It’s been ages since Patrick Vieira scored from the spot kick to give Arsenal the FA Cup in Cardiff City. As bad as it looks, no Arsenal fan can hide from the truth that we have watched our great team in anguish, going six unprofitable years without silverware.  As a realistic fan, I think all this has happened due to the stubbornness of our manager or some might say it’s due to bad luck, that we lost the Carling Cup to a now relegated team, Birmingham City.

Arsenal has been a team without leadership, since the day Thierry Henry left for Barcelona. Let’s not talk about the man, William Gallas, who took over as captain from him, but let’s talk about the man who took over from Mr. Gallas.  Having watched Cesc ever since he was 16, I have never one day, doubted his ability on the field. His style of play,  his great vision, oozes of confidence and it’s a beauty to behold when he has the ball, every touch is classic.  No one can deny his ability, he’s truly a world-class player.  But ever since he took over from Gallas, I was never in support of this decision. I doubted his ability to lead, organize and command a team like Arsenal.

Each time, I think of a leader, a commander in an Arsenal shirt, only one name keeps ringing a bell in my head, no more than the man , who has proved his ability and stability in the heart of our defense, adapting to English football in earnest, despite coming all the way from Holland. Guess who? Yeah, you are right. Thomas Vermaelen. The no- nonsense man should lead our team out next season, he has all the charisma and ingredients to be a great Arsenal captain.  Let us all pray the bad Achilles injury, that rocked him last season, never comes back.

This article is debatable, I am sure some will say no, some want Robin Van Persie, while some  might even say it should be Jack Wilshere. Yes, they are all fantastic players, who did great things for us last season. As for RVP,  he’s been so inconsistent all season, moreover I don’t suggest we use a front man as our captain. He will hardly see what’s going on behind him unlike a defender, who sees everything on the field. Let’s take a look at the top clubs in Europe, they all have a defender as their skipper. For Jack, however, he is just not ready yet. At least not now, maybe in the nearest future. TV5 for captain. I hope it will happen soon.

Thank you for reading.

Van Persie should be captain with Vermaelen as vice captain. Wilshire is years off being ready for that. One thing for sure if we keep Cesc and he remains captain it’s an insult to every Arsenal fan out there and the rest of the team. I don’t understand why he doesn’t ask for a transfer request and forfeit his money, but he’s too greedy for that.

I am a season ticket holder and watch Arsenal week in, week out. When TV5 came back last year he was shouting and motivating the other players on his FIRST game back. This is exactly what we need, someone who isn’t scared to have a go. At that point I turned to my friend and said TV5 needs to be captain. I hope Wenger makes it happen!

You are absolutely spot on, infact I cannot agree with you less. Mere looking at Vermalen facial you have got to get this feeling that he is a beast when it comes to field matters. You grab my vote on this.

I like your assessment on who should be captain but you also need to get your facts right. Vermaelen is from Belgium….

TV5 is the best, we don’t need to buy a CB…naaah. We just need to work on communication of our current center backs

Again the author meant he was the Ajax captain in Holland.

I totally agree that Vermaelen should be our captain.A leader should be firm, passionate, motivated and full of drive. We need someone like him to shout at players on the pitch in order to get better performance and good results.

Van Persie was injured, not inconsistent. When he was fit and playing he was perhaps the most consistent player in the league.

And I don’t think TH14 was a particularly good captain either.

Wenger makes the high profile players captains to incentivise them to stay at the club. It’s much harder for quality players to leave the club if they’re the captain.

Though for what it’s worth, i agree with you and TV5 would make an excellent captain.

Zicactly. Inconsistent my arsenal… nearly a goal a game the whole time he was fit.

Another blogger spouting the tired old cliches without thinking for five seconds. At least he didn’t call him injury-prone.

I think arsenal captaincy should directly be give to a defender not a striker becouse during the time of patrick viera as arsenal captain he very well.

TV 5 ticks all the boxes and this should not be a debate. But he shouls just watch out for one Jack the Boy. I dont think anyone in oour squad measurers to Jack when it come to passion for the sport as well as the team.If he was jsut two years older he would have gotten my vote on this. But let us wait for Le Gaffe

Vermaelen is the most suitable for the captain job. as for Van Persie although I think that he deserve it but I think that given the captaincy to him will take away he prowessness as a top markman as he is.

I think that either RVP or TV would make great captains, they are both very commited to the club. You can jus see from the expression on van Persies face and the way he celebrates when he scores that hes giving everything he can for the club, look back at the barca game. As for TV, hes clearly very good at reading the game which helps when orginization and commading team mates which is what he does and does well. Who would I pick? For me its a toss of a coin, one thing is for sure though, fabregas wouldnt be in my top 7 choices for captain for arsenal. As for future capitan, Jack is an obvous contender though i’d like to point out what I saw from one of our young guns in our 1-0 win over man utd last season. I remember seeing aaron ramsey shouting at the more experianced players to get into position and to get back when defending set peices and pointing to tell team mates where to go, it was very suprising but very impressive, so dont count ramsey out for future captain in 4-5 years. Oh and TV5 was born and grew up in belgium but he came to arsenal from ajax in holland.

“Arsenal has been a team without leadership, since the day Thierry Henry left for Barcelona.””As for RVP, he’s been so inconsistent all season, moreover I don’t suggest we use a front man as our captain. He will hardly see what’s going on behind him unlike a defender, who sees everything on the field”. There is more to a captain than what you have analysed. I am sorry, but leave this to the decision-makers. Stories like this do not really help the club. These are personal opinion which may affect our other valuable players, am saying these thinking of Cesc and RVP, and trying what might be going through their minds. RVP has been consistent and less prone to injuries compared to, with due respect, Verm. As to me I leave this to Wenger.

      EIE it was Wales, Doh!
Yes I really like Vermalen for captain but accusing RVP of inconstancy is ridiculous. As usual he was injured for half the season and still managed to score a shed load of goals.

Really i buy the idea that TV5 be allowed to the Arsenal captain. All respect to Robin Van-Persie (RVP), he has done some great jobs for Arsenal but now we are looking at who the cap fits, a great motivator and a well positioned player on the pitch. However, Wenger has been doing his own thing the way he likes which has not been paying Arsenal any good in resent years, who is sure he will buy the fan’s idea. He is living on old glory. Pls let Thomas Vermalen be the captain come next season.

VP has a bit of a bad attitude from what i can see. He tends to flare up when decisions don’t go his way so i don’t think he would be the best choice. TV seems a bit more level headed.

Every Arsenal fan (except these new ones that have arrived in recent years)
knows that Arsenal have been leaderless, competitiveless and predictable for past five seasons.
Pretty useless football, inaccurate non-professional forwards,a guy in goal from Hackney Marshes, guys at centre back who Wenger” thinks” are centre backs. Full backs and so called “Wingers” who can,t equal the standard of park players for centreing.
And they have the cheek to put the price up by 6% when the standard of excitment enjoyed by Arsenal fans now has fallen by 60%!

after thinking for about 10 minutes as to who should be arsenals captain IF cesc was to leave, i think it should be van persies. what message would wenger send to robin if he gave it to tv5 on only his 3rd season at the club when van persie has been at the club a lot longer. tv5 is a great shout for the captaincy but id give it to robin

Isn’t it obvious for a commanding leader we need a centre back who is a captain! Go for Vermaelen! Its proven success, JT of chelsea, Vidic for United and Puyol for Barca.

    • rudolf

      July 18, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Tony Adams and Viera for Arsenal too. Both defensive leaders who achieved so much. TV would make the perfect captain. Fabregas was made captain just to make him stay at Arsenal. Clearly he’s not leader-material and has to be replaced if we want to improve. Our main weakness is defensive organisation especially in set-pieces which TV can surely solve if he got that extra power of being captain. C’mon Wenger, do the right thing! We’re still behind you. Gunner 4 life!

Vermaleen would be the best man to be the captain of the team because you can see it him a beast and ready to do anything for the team a warrior forget about not been and english man

Vermalem for Captain, VP injury prone and attitude problem that can cost us important games when he gets frustrated or feels decisions are not going his way. VP must concentrate on scoring goals and could face serious competition upfr

Van persie has been very loyal to arsenal and he practically breathes soccer. He would be an amazing captain.
