Arsenal second match in pre-season came to a very dull end when they were held 1-1 against Hangzhou Green town at the Meihu Stadium on Saturday. We conceded early due to an error from rookie GK Mannone, but equalised before the first half ended thanks to Carlos Vela.

As for the problems regarding the club, oh where do I start ? The manager made a few comments regarding transfers and if he actually believes in what he is saying or even has ANY faith in what he is saying, I think he is on weed.

“I don’t think we are weak defensively, but we are an offensive team. Sometimes that exposes our defenders a bit more than other teams.”

“I believe we have quality defenders. One is Thomas Vermaelen and he did not play last year. In open play, we were one of the better defences [last season], but we conceded too many goals on set-pieces and that is where we want to improve this season.”

His first statement says it all. He admits that we are not weak defensively. BUT if you read the both lines, the inferred meaning is quite the opposite. We are exposed because we are offensive. Well, that is the point of a good defense. Barcelona conceded the lowest number of goals in La Liga last season. They too have a ‘good’ attack, but are they exposed like us?

The second part of the statement is still ‘less hurtful.’ Vermaelen is indeed a quality defender, but with him our entire defense conceded 41 goals 2 seasons ago. Place an apple in a pile of crap does make it smell crappy.

And as for the last part, that we have been the best defensive side in open play is something which is quite irrelevant. It just shows that we SUCKED at set pieces even more. Being the best in open play and conceding 43 goals, what else will one make of it?

Wenger keeps ridiculous faith in this team. Of course, I don’t know what goes on in your horse-shoe dressing room but even if he did say anything I am sure something would come out in all these years. His continuous rant about how positive things are at the club is clearly becoming a farce, and seriously I do not like it. It makes me sick!

Yes, management takes a lot out in people, and seeing our manager’s age it is certainly taking a lot out of him. But that being said is it not possible for a person of his stature to see what the plain eye sees?

At the end of the 2009-2010 he pointed out the main problem with this Arsenal team was its defense. We let in 41 goals, and he said he would fix it. He did admit that he knew the defense was the problem and that a championship contending side CANNOT afford to concede so many goals.

“We want to improve in quality. It is not necessarily a big number of players needed and overall I believe you don’t win the title when you concede 40 goals.”

This season we ended up conceding more goals – 43. Nice promise…

Asia tour over, London, here we come!

    Another tedious anti-Wenger article.

Wenger should be sacked before the new season starts and a stronger manager who is not afraid to tell the team where they’re lacking and is willing to spend money on established players rather than youngsters and also play them in their correct positions.

Excellent plan, intelligent & well thought through. Like it how you came up with some good names of available top managers to replace Wenger. I suggest you take up football management yourself, you’ll go very far, no doubt.

Arsenal could get closer to winning things if that moron Wenger knew how to organise a defence. The players aren’t the problem, it’s the manager.

That `moron`Wenger was voted manager of the decade earlier this year….some `moron` eh??? You all have such short memories, show the man some respect for all that he `has` achieved.

Ivan Gazidis has said that we are going to spend to reinforce the team.Just because Wenger doesn`t mouth off all the time, like Mancini, doesn`t mean that he isn`t working to bring the right players in.Why do some people always read `bad` into everything that Wenger says? Yes,we do need to boulster up the defense and,I feel positive that he will do so.Have you noticed that the teams that Barca play against are nothing like the PL teams? They only have competition from one team, unlike the PL where there are a lot of tough teams.Barca wouldn`t find it such a walk over playing in the prem week after week!Loyalty can be a good or a bad thing but, surely you have noticed that Wenger is getting rid of some of the under achievers…at last. Lastly, has everyone forgot that,in our last season at Highbury,we only scraped through to the CL because West Ham beat Spurs. That season we lost games to teams like Portsmouth…and that was with Henry and co.onboard.I am looking forward to a good season.Come on the Gunners!

Your point about that statement is very true but there is a contradiction here that has not been picked up. AW says we are not weak defensively but that as we are an offensive team our defenders are often more exposed. This exposure would therefore have to be during open play when we have committed men forward to the attack rather than at set pieces when your team has people back defending and has time to sort out the defence of the set piece. The contracdiction is therefore when AW goes on to say that we were one of the best defensively in open play i.e the very time that a more offensive team would be exposed. If you conceed so many at set pieces when you have players back helping the back 4 and have time to organise then you must be weak defensively. This is the very time that the back 4 is not exposed and therefore the offensive style of the team is irrelevant.

I can’t stand Wenger and I don’t think he the man to take the club forward. Brilliant in the earlier years of his tenure but has failed to address the defensive problems afflicting us the last few years. However, what do you expect him to say? The defenders are crap and I will replace them at the earliest opportunity? Give him a chance to put it right this summer and then you can criticise him in your pointless article!!!

We’re neither an offensive or defensive team. From my prospective we’ve lost our cutting edge, and tend to play keep-ball in the areas where we are allowed to. At times we look so one- dimensional, and lacking in ideas. I cannot remember the last time we scored from a set-play, yet we’re always likely to concede from one. I’m disappointed that we’ve failed to rectify our obvious defensive vulnerabilities over the past few seasons, and Arsene’s recent comments point to more of the same. Oh Lord, give me strength.

I have no say until the season kicks off, I dont wanna hear more of these boring same old rumours again, Wenger knows better, if he fails to win us a trophy this season he`ll have a case to answer to all arsenal fans. Until then, love you all gooners, lets hope Ryo plays this season.

Whilst I love and respect Wenger for all that he has done for the club and there is no doubt he is a genius who not only has transformed our club, but also the whole of professional football in this country, he is seriously flawed (as most genius’s are!). His mission of trying to create another barca on a shoestring with average offensive players (some notable players apart like cesc, rvp (when not injured), nasri)and quite frankly poor defensive players, will not work and is proving to be his downfall. His successful sides (and all successful teams) have been built on a solid defence and quick incisive attacking football. He has tried to reinvent the wheel and we now watch tippy tappy often impotent attacking football, in front of a porous defence (there is not one natural defender in the club. They are all reasonable ball players, but none of them are good old fashioned defenders!). Add all of that to a brittle mentality and no natural leaders in the squad and we are where we are. Going back to his genius, it is amazing that we have done as well as we have over the past 2/3 seasons. If, as should have happened, we had not made Champions League in one of those seasons, he and the board would have had to address the problems. However, as long as we do, the board will be happy and AW will keep on trying to prove he has been right all along!!

May i just add to that the fact that AW did not create the defence when he became successful, it was mostly there already. This also proves the point AW unfortunately has a weakness and it’s time to go for him now and let someone else have a go.

We can’t defend set pieces, that’s the issue that everyone knows needs addressing. I personally would like to see one more centre back, preferably a blook massive one come in but what I think really needs sorting out is the organisation in defence. Something needs to be done at the coaching stage to ensure whoever ends up playing know how to defend a corner or a free kick. Lesser teams than us do it very successfully so I don’t see why we shouldn’t be able to. Get one of the old boys like Keown or Campbell in and teach them how to do it properly.

Also I am fairly certain blook is not a work and I actually meant bloody.

Barca. play in two comp.s where they wont let them tackle it would be a lot diff. in the pl. see if Xavi holds the ball against the likes of Stoke etc. where they take the ball shins legs teeth anything that they get close to

Mistake by rookie keeper Mannone. I think you will find a lack of our defenders in coveringand clearing ‘their ball’ from a set piece meant he performed a great reaction save at point blank, which he should not have been dealing with. All this aggressive writing and not even a premier league ball has been kicked. The transfer window is not closed yet either.
