Wenger Continues To Gamble Arsenal’s Future

Is he the greatest manager in the club’s history? Yes, he definitely is. He certainly can look back on a good number of years in which the club did so well under his tutelage, but all that is in the past now as those years filled with trophy-laden glory have been replaced in more recent times by a six season drought of trophies, thanks to Mr. Wenger’s stubbornness in sticking to his youth policy.

Not only is Wenger stubborn, he is perhaps the biggest gambler in football, as evident in his refusal to buy a defender during the January transfer window last season, even when it was becoming clear that TV5’s injury then would keep the Belgian international out for virtually the whole of 2010/11.

Rather, Wenger kept his faith on a leaking backline with the likes of Sebastien Squillaci just as having to watch such players as Nicklas Bendtner, Abou Diaby, Marouane Chamakh, Manuel Almunia and even Swiss defender Johan Djourou wear the Arsenal jersey was frustrating. These players never should have come anywhere close to the red and white of the Gunners, let alone wear it and worse yet, play in it at the heart of the club’s defence.

This makes me wonder what it would be like if the squad that made up the legendary ‘Invincibles’ played against the current squad, perhaps a 5-0 demolition of the current squad with Thierry Henry getting past Squillaci with great ease and Dennis Bergkamp using his sultry skills to leave Djourou helpless in his wake. And it would be unimaginable to see either of Chamakh or Bendtner get past Tony Adam or Martin Keown or even Sol Campbell; who had two spells with us.

Yet in all this, Wenger has forged ahead with his gambling by letting Gael Clichy go to Manchester City, without getting a replacement that’s better than the Frenchman and by the look of things in the transfer market, he may not be getting one before the season starts in a few weeks time.

The pre-season match at FC Cologne made me realize what a mess that side of Arsenal’s defence would be should Kieran Gibbs be our starting left-back in the coming season as the young English international was found wanting on numerous occasions where he failed to do his primary job as a defender, mostly after his forays forward.

I cannot make clearly enough the horror that awaits if he is to face the likes of Gareth Bale, Antonio Valencia, Nani and Aaron Lennon among a host of others in the fast, physical nature of the English Premier League.

Hopefully not you say? I wish I could share your optimism but it’s the grim state of things. In my opinion, Wenger must stop gambling or else the trophy drought will continue.

What do you think? Am I the only one that thinks so?

What? Yet another lazy illinformed piece of garbage?

Well said. Totally agree. I notice he does not mention Theo against Clichy, VWP against Keown or Cesc against any of the midfield.

Indeed, ignorant blog full of gutterpress fed opinions. 12 sounds about right; attracted to arsenal as an impresional 6-ish year old and now an immature puber who wants it all, who wants it now, who wants to spend spend spend.

You are right but i don’t want to believe that Chamakh is as bad as you have said. This is a lad who came to the league and scored important goals that so many strikers in the premiership in their first season couldn’t do.He’s not a bad player and he’s not the problem of Asenal but Wenger who has refused to buy. This year will be the worst for Arsenal

i definitely agree that the defence needs work 4 me squid is rubbish, koscielny n djorou lack consistency but would gr8 benchwarmers same with gibbs, sagna n verma r the only quality we have in the back -i wish eboue was left footed at least his more reliable, clichy was getting shitter but if arsenal buy a quality LB (aly cisskho of lyon-he does 15km of running a game! strong n powerful n wenger will luv him cause his french) n CB (mamoudou sakho- strong, good in the air n FAST n young N french so it’s possible plus his captain PSG) the defence is not consisten so they should sit on the bench until they find consistency

Ivan Gazidis said the other day that arsenal could no longer compete in the transfer market with the other top 4 clubs. Its arsene’s way or no way at all. Arsenal fans should strap themselves in for a bumpy ride this season and hope arsene knows best. Its the only option at the moment.

“Tony Adam or Martin Keown or even Sol Campbell”
Lol, Campbell was the best of the lot. He was like adams crossed with Keown with much more pace and power than the two combined.

Your comments are nothing but a letter written in fear. 1stly Clichy wasn’t that brilliant. 12 of the goals conceeded by Arsenal last season. I counted this as I’m obsessed with reasons as to why we did not win anything last season, and I repeat 12 times we conceeded was because Clichy played them on side without being diciplined at the back. Clichy was not a good defender, but atacked really well. However he cant cut inside and take shots like gibbs can. I think gibbs is suffering with Nerves right now for the time being. I rate him to be better than Clichy ever was by the end of the year. Yes he is not the better defender compared to Clichy, but he will be a better defender than Clichy. Now that New castle gave the go ahead for Enrique we can buy him. If we bought him Gibbs will never become the player who evry1 thinks he will become. So I say give the lad a chance. He is good, and has my backing to do well.

I’m not a big Clichy fan, but your not being very fair !!! He was much better before that lazy little Russian started playing infront of him. I’ve played full back, and if the person infront of you is not willing to put in a shift, it can leave you very exposed !!!
Selling Clichy was a must for me. He was one of those players that, when he looked in the mirror, should have known he was taking the p*** !!! Leave to win trophies !!!! The only way he will get one a City is the same way he one one with us. Eleven subs appearances !!!!

then n only then can arsenal remain title contenders, stekelenburg would nice i mean szczensy could actually b really worried about playin good, plus maarten will bond with rvp n has many years of CL experience n arsenal will never have a goalkeeping problem at least 4 10yrs or so

gibbs will be good given the time, but in the mean time he will cost us more than 12goals.and when he is ready, another youngster will be given a chance to learn at the expense of arsenal.

Arsenal should axe Wenger before he brings Arsenal down ,as he ill if he does not get the proven epl defender(s).

    July 26, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Gael Clichy was never a prolific left back and made a lot of mistakes that caused Arsenal to concede goals.

What do you think and who do you think is the best left back, Sucker?

As I have said before ,our full backs do not know the basic of defending .AW may feel he wants to do it his way which is fine as long as he does not charge me £1300 for a season ticket while he does

    • rickthegooner

      July 26, 2011 at 4:43 pm

We don’t have full backs in the traditional way of things. We have wing backs !!!! They are supposed to supplement the attack. They are supposed to bomb forward. The problem comes when they do, players like Arshavin don’t cover, and Song won’t sit. He keeps getting ahead of the ball. We just lack the discipline to play like that !!!!
As for paying £1300 for a season ticket, no one is forcing you mate !!!! If you feel it’s not worth it don’t pay it !!!!!!!!!!!!

You trying to tell me Sagna cannot defend? Clichy was awesome up till about 2/3 seasons ago, it was time for him to go. To say Wenger doesnt know how to drill FBs is laughable and shows why “fans” should keep their noses out of team affairs. Especially ones with f**k all football knowledge or insight.

Now no less an authority on the epl,Lawrenson, has stated that until and unless Wenger add steel to the gunners, they are doomed to fight for the fourth spot. I am in full agreeement with him.
Wenger’s blind spot is costing the gunners dearly and until he admits he is wrong with his philosophy, the gunners will never win the epl.

      July 26, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Hahahahaha! Mark Lawrenson is a dinosaur! If thats the best you can do, I suggest you go back to bed and w*nk over that high pitched bouffanted wrinkled old fart!

Lawrensen would have us playing like Stoke FFS!

      Get a grip you moron

I think Gibbs has to be given a chance. It is a gamble not replacing Clichy because Gibss is raw and injury prone but at the same time he is talented and could turn out to be better than Clichy, who most of us agree wasn’t that good. The real gamble is that he doesn’t buy good central defenders, he worries too much about their technical ability on the ball when the priority should be how well they defend and can they cope with the physical challenge of the EPL. If he doesn’t put that right this summer then that will be the biggest gamble of all as we can say goodbye to the champions league if we defend like we did last year.

  16. rickygunners

    July 26, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Agreed with what NickW said. We should not comment too much at this stage. Anyway, Wenger and Gazidis will have to leave if cabinet is empty for 7 years.

Gazidis is the CEO and the overall in-charge, he and can overrule Wenger on transfer policy if he wants to.

I agree 100%.When we lose even the 5th position next season all things will be revealed (our rivals are strengthen themselves). Come on gooners it is the real time to make pressure on the stingy manager before Arsenal Collapse.
