The XI: Meet Liverpool’s Key Men for Next Season [Part 2]

By on August 8, 2011

Here is Part 2 of our series on Liverpool’s likely eleven for next season, you can check out Part 1 here.

CB: Martin Skrtel

If we aren’t going to bring another centerback in this summer transfer window, I am going with Martin Skrtel here. Our no-nonsense Slovakian defender is dominant in the air and knows how to stop the attacker even when he is in the tightest of positions. In my opinion perhaps the least erratic defender in our back 4.

In his time with Liverpool, he has NEVER gotten a red card in the Premier League. I am not trying to suggest that he is a softy, instead I’m trying to imply that Skrtel is good at timing his tackles and that he is a good reader of the game. Agger would be my second choice if either Skrtel of Carragher are to be injured at any time, but Agger in my opinion plays more like a leftback, his physical game is decent, but is defending indeed is pretty erratic, especially what I saw against Valerenga (as a defensive performance) was pretty bad from him.

LB: New Signing

Well, not much to say about this. I just simply think that Aurelio can’t last the distance as our first choice leftback, with his injury problems and all that. Insua and Jack Robinson are both talented, but I think that Insua is still a bit too slow for the English game, the fact that he couldn’t make an impact with Turkey simply suggests he ain’t cut out for the big time.

Jack Robinson is still a bit too young. He’s got lots of time to learn and I foresee him being on this list himself in a year or two. His display against Arsenal was absolutely phenomenal for a youngster with limited first team experience. The fact that he could contain one of the trickiest wingers in the league (Walcott) suggests that he is definitely one for the future.

DCM: Charlie Adam

I am going for a 4-2-3-1 formation here and Adam fits the bill for defensive midfielder. His diagonal balls and his tough tackling made me go for this formation. His passing is absolutely class and I wonder whether he just might displace Aurelio and Steven Gerrard and become our first choice free kick taker. Would stop play well and would also provide us with accurate passing all around the park.

Keep a look out for Part 3 of our series tomorrow…

Adam isn’t a defensive midfielder, his tackling is poor and his defensive qualities at Blackpool were none existent

Adam can’t run either. Scholes is quicker than him, and he retired through lack of pace.
He’s the slowest player in prem.
6th is the best the scum can hope for. What a crap team. Downing aswell. Ha ha haa.
    Nzogbia is much better.

@Sreejith I’m sure you recognize he got 2 red cards last season. Breaking Bale’s ankle and that’s not tough tackling?

Agger can’t defend? Look at our defensive record last season once Kenny came on board and tell me he can’t defend.

Agger is our best defender by such a large margin, I’d say the other CB’s would be embarrassed if he wasn’t the first choice CB when fit. If he played 40 games per year he’d be worth 3 times the price of Skrtel.
As Brendan said – Just look at our defensive record with and without him at CB.
Forget about games when Roy, in an act of gross stupidity decided to play our best CB at LB.
A fit in form Agger is world class, and in the top few CB’s in the league.

Charlie Adam has a very high tackle succes rate, unfortunately he gives away too many fouls and gets too many cards when he doesn’t win them. He’ll make a fine deep lying playmaker in the Molby mould, but we’ll still need a DM like Lucas or a new top DM signing to play alongside him.
