Arsenal Fighting Against Blatant Favouritism Towards Rivals?

Are Man Utd favoured with refereeing decisions? Are Arsenal handed rough treatment because they have a heavy French influence?

It is amazing that we have to give Man United, at least a ten point handicap regarding decisions that go in their favour, and decisions that go against us. Alan Pardew, manager of Newcastle, summed up this matter quite appropriately when interviewed after the Man United game, after Hernandez was not given a penalty. Pardew remarked that he had told the referee, that it was rather brave of the referee not to have given Man United a penalty.

This is a clear statement that supports the theory that referees are afraid to rule against United because they feel intimidated. Why should a referee who has made the correct decision be described as ‘brave’? Why should Man United be treated any differently to any other team in the premiership?

There is no doubt that United are the world-wide selling point of the Premiership and you need your number one product to be successful, in order to sell television rights and appeal to a wider audience. It is all about maximising revenue. If United are not winning, then the Premier League cannot sell overseas rights are highly as they are currently doing, because there won’t be as many countries interested in buying the rights at exorbitant rates. Nevertheless, should fair play be sacrificed for this purpose where it makes it impossible for other clubs to compete on the same level playing field?

A clear illustration of this was when Fabregas conceded a penalty against Spurs by blocking a Spurs free kick. The very next week, a Wigan player did the same thing against Arsenal and nothing was given. United always get the rub of the green and that is no co-incidence. The Gary Neville incident vs West Brom, was as blatant as the goal that wasn’t given, when the ball crossed the line against Spurs a couple of years before. How can anyone miss that? The list goes on and on. If someone makes a video of the decisions that have won United titles, it would be feature film in length.

It sounds like fairytale stuff when Newcastle come back from four goals down to draw four all against us, but does anyone, apart from committed Arsenal fans, bother to question how this result was really made possible?

The FA, in my view, see Arsenal as a French club playing in the English Premier League and therefore they dish out a catalogue of poor decisions against Arsenal. Arsene Wenger, being the intelligent man that he is, is fully aware of this and he is equally aware that it is futile to complain because he will be branded a sore loser looking for excuses by the English press who are part of the wider conspiracy.

They refer to Arsenal’s fine style of play not producing any trophies for six years and a lack of an English spine in the Arsenal team. They clearly overlook the fact that poor refereeing has ensured that Arsenal have not got any trophies to show for their fine exhibition of the game. Don’t also forget the blatant fouling of Arsenal players have resulted in long term injuries, that clearly affected our results. If the playing field were level, then the manner in which Arsenal have played the game over the past six years, would have produced a trophy ages ago.

Notice how the English press point to Chelsea and Manchester City as being big spenders but fail to mention that Manchester United are also huge spenders. They paid £30 million for Ferdinand a while back when transfer fees were much lower and £27 million for Rooney. Don’t forget they have a number of flops that they have paid over £16 million to acquire.

Until these issues which are swept under the carpet are openly addressed, then it will be impossible for Arsenal, who believe in the correct spirit of the game, to win a significant trophy for perhaps another six years!

    *rolling laffing*
This is the most ignorant article I’ve read my whole life.
C’mon!! if there’s any bias, its in each individual referee’s state of mind, not some orchestrated move by the illuminati to keep ManU at the top.
Sometimes it seems frustrating from an arsenal point of view when we don’t kill a game off after having numerous chances, only to concede a late penalty and lose the game, but did ManU/FA/Barca/aliens make Bendtner, walcott or chamack less efficient in front of goal??
Although When I look at the amount of times Van Persie has hit the
wood work, I begin to wonder if its the work of aliens from outer space…lol
We need to come off this complex, and blame trading and use our minds for something more creative (write a book, or make a movie)
If we score half as many chances as we create in a game, we could concede 2 goals in every match and still win the league…. This should be the worry.

Very happy pple are getting to see what I have seen in the EPL for a long time. I sincerely believe the EPL is more corrupt than the continental leagues we always condemn. Guys, mark it on the walls, few years to come it come out that the FA, some referees and even other club managers cook the league for manu to swallow. Red cards against arsenal since Wenger joined would have been 2/3 less if it was manu. The press and all those scum will always make sure Wenger loses. For the last 3 seasons if the field was even Arsenal should have won them hands down but whatever you say, these scum of ( “I know better English pundits and we are the best in the world “)them will analyse a whole lot of shit. But again lets wait and see oneday one of them will tell it all that the EPL is as bad as FIFA.

what that gotta do with us not being able to break down defense, what that got to do with us not defending properly, what that gotta do with us not being able to play with heart, what that gotta do with us not buying keeper, DM, CB and a true goal scoring striker, what that gotta do with our manager getting his tactics wrong and not being able make timely subs or managing his players, what that gotta do with our managers playing players out of position all the time, Why are all the other clubs and Arsenal nit threatening to break away from the PERM if they don’t get treated fairly against United. I agree United is favored by the refs more than any other club in the league, but it did stop Chelsea from winning the league and FA cup and it is not why we can’t win. By the way we only play united twice a year and even if we loose both game we could still win the league by winning the rest of the other games. Your point is baseless

    • Curly Fries

      August 9, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Are you as thick as you sound?

What’s it got to do with it that Man Utd gain points from bad referee decisions and Arsenal are cost points from bad refereeing decisions? Are you SERIOUSLY that stupid?

      • TrueGooner

        August 9, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Really Curly Fries, Did you even read my statement in full or are you one of those that everything has to be in black and white? I pointed out that United do get all the calls and is the darling of the the epl, but also listed reasons why we lost games and are not winning. The point of the article is to prove why we haven’t won and will not win silver. The write reasons is baseless and fact-less. Which part of that you don’t understand or do you feel that calling people stupid is a cool thing to do?

        • Curly Fries

          August 9, 2011 at 3:57 pm

We’re not perfect, sure. But that’s not the point. You’re sort of vindicating it by saying well we’re not good enough anyway – that’s not the point, it would have been closer and anything can happen.

          • TrueGooner

            August 9, 2011 at 4:00 pm

it is true we are not good enough. Everybody knows that, so why deny it?

            • Curly Fries

              August 9, 2011 at 4:19 pm

We don’t know if we’re good enough because it’s not a level playing field. This is the worst Arsenal team for some time but it might have been good enough last year because Man Utd were poor, Chelsea folded, Liverpool were non-existent… but as it was with these terrible decisions Arsenal’s title was ended. Similarly Man Utd’s was given a boost. Why deny it? Is it because it’s cool to beat up your own team?

              • TrueGooner

                August 9, 2011 at 7:28 pm

It has nothing to beat my team. You can not prove that united winning the title is because other teams are cheated when they play united. Arsenal did not lose out on the title because they were cheated when they faced United. We lost out on the CC because we are not good enough to beat B-ham. If we are good enough and only lost out because we we get cheated from winning why are we all calling for Wenger to buy players? Why should he waste money on players if we are gonna get cheated anyway? You say United was poor and Chelsea folded Lpool nonexistant, so if we were good enough why didn’t we take advantage a win? The game that we were really cheated in was the Newcastle game, but should we have allowed the to come back from 4-0. Why did the players maintain their composure and play the arsenal way by possession. why didn’t we score another goal. Why didn’t the midfield help the defense at 4-2 knowing that we get cheated easily. We do get cheated and kicked but that is not why we are not winning silverware. This is fact.

      • TrueGooner

        August 9, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Also there are times Arsenal have lost points even when the referee make some calls in our favor. The difference between us and United is the when they do get calls in their favor they use it to their advantage and keep playing hard, but we don’t. We lose concentration and concede stupid goals. Like I said if the writer point was the reason we won’t win, then no other team would win anything in England. Furgerson don’t baby sit and won’t let a player jog around for 60 minutes without pulling them out in a heartbeat and he won’t keep players that are not contributing for a long time. He spend money on the players he wants and manage is players well and they play with heart cause they know he don’t take no mess. That is why they win not because they get all the calls. Stop discrediting them and focus on what we need to do to achieve that success.

Does anyone remember the Man United v Arsenal game that ended 2-1 to the Devils, the one in which Arshavin scored a screamer? Arshavin was swept by Fletcher to the ground and in the process the Scot handled in the area, IN FULL VIEW OF MR MIKE DEAN, and he waved play on! The same man, in the same game, awarded a penalty to United when Rooney dived claiming to have been fouled by Almunia!!!
Remember the 50th game of Arsenal’s unbeaten run? Remember Rooney’s dive? What about the Spurs game when they led 2-0 only for United to win 5-2 THAT “FOUL” on Carrick by Gomes? What of the Blackpool game and THAT shove in the area by Vidic and no penalty awarded vs United? You’re absolutely spot on, United get away with too many favours!!!
In the 4-4 game [New Castle v Arsenal], if it was United, there’s no way the referee would give such ludicrous penalties Arsenal conceded.

As an outsider looking in, I thend to agree there is a certain bias from the British media , pundits, and rival managers towards Wenger. They go on and on about Wenger not winning a trophy in 6 years, Why pick on Wenger, why not David Moyes and any other teams (eg Liverpool not winning the Premier like for 20+ years). And when our players get maimed, what do the pundits say? This obvious bias translates to the officials.

    • HashGun

      August 9, 2011 at 7:04 pm

Tiger, spot on! There is an anti_Wenger bias! How dare a Frenchman ignore English ‘talent’? Wenger has and the consequences have been dire! But matter of factly, the only English player for whom there would have been a demand all over over the last 10 years would have been Rooney! I can’t think of any other Englishman! So perhaps Wenger and his chargers are being unfairly treated!

These comments are spot on and i’d like to add one more point and that is now know one talks of the number of English players playing for The Manchester Clubs or for Chelsea but when Arsenal only had a couple English players these hypocrites so called pundits and commentators always used to bring this point up ,why dont they bring it up now that Arsenal has more English players in their ranks

  12. Kevin

    August 9, 2011 at 5:19 pm

There are some alarming stats out there, Riley has given more penalties that anyone at Old Trafford.
Man U have more pens given to them at home than any other club.
No other manager has the right to complain and be listened to than Man U. Take the Nani incident last year when Clattentwat lets Nani score before a free kick is taken. Did anything that Harry say carry any weight on how poor that decision was? Lets not forget that, realistically, he’s the next England manager as well.
For fun someone, I can’t be arsed, should make a list of every incident that benefits United over the season and see what it actually looks like because, as this article points out, even we the public are becoming accustomed to it.

of all the favours UNITED have got the extra time awarded (9-12 minutes in some games) at OT each time they were chasing games is of profound significance. why did the fa not seek clarification from the refs chief when this issue came to light – simples, united are their favoured team to win the leagues and they cant be seen to be getting in the way. i will never forget also that reyes interest in the epl was ended by one dinosaur by the name of garry neville who o bruised his legs each time that the player saw all he needed about the total bias the league is all about.

Totally agree with this article. The countless decisions that go against Arsenal are so blatant yet we still have some Gunner’s fans who blame Wenger for everything that goes wrong. I think that anyone that laughs at this article doesn’t really watch any football. Some people just follow results and crap highlights on MOTD and SSN. The list is endless! Perfectly good goals disallowed for no good reason. So-called protection for refs is the new thing. However, nobody harasses refs quite like Man U players; Fletcher and Rooney have to be the worse. How often do they get carded for their behaviour. When Rooney swore into the camera, just about every pundit, manager etc made excuses for him: “oh, it’s just that he has that passion and fire in his belly. It’s not that serious.” When Drogba had his moment of madness, the establishment stepped in. What upsets me is that these refs are not even made to answer for things they have blatantly seen but turned a blind eye to. It makes me sad when these so-called Arsenal fans prefer to vilify club and manager rather than look at the bigger picture. Deluded is what they are. I’m sure they believe racism has ended and men and women are equal. Yeah, right!

Is this a joke? lol. Reading some of the comments posted on here after reading the article.. I used to think the majority of Arsenal fans are usually a sensible lot. But not around here it seems.

Look, every top team are going to cry foul and say the ref or FA is favouring other clubs and with more than 38+ game being played over the course of a season. Any club can dig up proof to claim that their the victim of bias treatment. Be it Arsenal, Chelsea, or United

But the cold hard fact is Arsenal didn’t win the league because they weren’t good enough. And United did because they were just that much better. No more, no less.. there is always going to be decisions that isn’t to our liking just as much as there are going to be decision that is in one’s favour. Obviously the one that is against us would naturally stick out like a sore thumb and be more memorable- but it doesn’t discount the fact that regardless of all this. It still comes down to your team taking their chance and playing well enough to not be bothered by stupid decisions.

It’s not that hard is it? if you’re good enough- you’re gonna score more than the opponent. If you’re good enough, you’re gonna keep them from scoring more often than not.

      August 9, 2011 at 9:21 pm

p.s: did the person who write the article REALLY trying to compare your club’s situation of not winning any title with the likes of Everton and Liverpool?? really?? come on… Arsenal are much better than that!

The press do point towards our spending, but maybe not as much as City and Chelsea as our spending are largely backed by our revenues, unlike the aforementioned two clubs.

I can’t say that the article is completely factual. However, United getting the rub of the green is something I agree with – ManU vs Aston Villa, Carling cup final, Vidic should have been sent off & a penalty given. Jose M said ‘tainted cup’ after Real’s loss to Barca but if ever there was a tained cup, that Carling cup was it!

well said!!!the article was spot on. the writer has even gone ahead to site clear examples. Arsenal vs Man U, Vidic blatantly deflects the ball with his hands before Van persie could finish the job with his head, the whole world sees this less the officials. the list is endless. if the type of officiating we witnessed last season continues then something is awfully wrong. the writer just said the truth, and painfully so!!!

Its very obvious that manutd are been anchored by FA and match officials whether u want to agreed on that or not. Arsenal is the only team in England playing real soccer and what soccer is really meant for “fair play“ arsenal will never play to hurt anyone or even start to complant after hurting some1 lyk what silly evra always did. SAF employed lorent blanc as their ex-player to hv talks with nasri not to extend his contract in order for him to manunited, look at the insult barcelona are given us including tiny Manchester city that hav nothing in history. What has FA got to do abt that? Now tell me can all these atrocities they are tying around Arsenal‘s neck be tempted on man u? Neva FA will stand *n that is total nonsense. For d past fews years now sunderland has been given manu 4points can‘t u see that. I strongly believe that ARSENAL ARE CHAMPS AND ONE DAY THEY WILL REGAIN THEIR STAND! Thanks.

The evidence is there. Get a scientific head on and do the research. You could even try this– compare the Dynamic Ds performances when Arsenal is playing to their performances when Arsenal is not. The difference is amazing. Do the research before you gob off. The spineless press know what is happening but dare not lift the lid for fear of invoking match fixing— in this country–in the EPL??? They wouldn’t do that would they? Panic not. The press are shit scared of killing the goose that layed the golden egg. Once again the great ‘free press’ turn out to be weak lackeys. Trick at preying into poor people’s private lives but useless at routing out genuine and disgraceful scandal.

Man U have not won the league or a trophy without assistance for a number of years now. It is actually embarassing that some try to argue otherwise.

The gooners who actually agree with this article, I hate to say, are blinkered. Our team fails because of Wenger and the team, and to look elsewhere for excuses smacks of desperation. This is why we are the laughing stock of football fans around the world, why are best players want to leave us, why we win nothing. While other teams are busy preparing, we spend our time whining. Get over it fellow Gooners, there is no bias, stand by our team in a rational manner and avoid looking like utter tossers agreeing with tripe like this article.

  29. anan

    August 10, 2011 at 6:12 pm

Right, so United get all the decisions and Arsenal get none. Part II of this article will focus on how Lampards girth helps fill out chelsea’s midfield but Arsenal are forced to live with thin waifs, how can the FA allow this. Part III of this article will examine how City get all the money while Arsenal are struggling with poverty, cant afford to buy shoes for their players and are forced by arabs at gunpoint to buy mediocre talent for lots of money.

The paranoia is stunning and competes with the myopia to kill gooner hearts.
