The XI: Meet Liverpool’s Key Men for Next Season [Part 3]

Here is  Part 3 of my best XI for Liverpool for the forthcoming season. The Players that I’ve already picked are:

  • GK: Pepe Reina
  • RB: Glen Johnson
  • CB: Jamie Carragher
  • CB: Martin Skrtel
  • LB: New Signing
  • CDM (Central Defensive Midfielder): Charlie Adam

CDM: Lucas Leiva

It was quite a tough call for me, whether to place Meireles or Lucas here, but I think that Lucas is very energetic, and as seen towards the end of last season he’s improved a lot in terms of tackling, tracking down of players and simply he’s good at breaking down play. So that’s why I have chosen him.

He covers a lot of ground and I think that Meireles would be more suited to a more advanced role, whilst what I was going for was someone who sits back a little more.

LW: Stewart Downing

Well, the obvious pick for left wing. A great pre-season for Stewart Downing and we’re already expecting great things out of the Englishman. Got lots of pace and most importantly a very accurate cross, I am placing my bet down that he will get a total of at least 10 assists next season if he goes through the season injury-free.

Carroll struggled to make an initial impact, but that’s simply because the Liverpool game didn’t really suit the game of the physical Andy Carroll, who is more used to getting on to accurate crosses.

RW/CAM: Steven Gerrard

I know he’s still out for a month or so, but when he’s back, I would like to see him playing in a more advanced role. With Lucas providing bite to the midfield further back and Charlie Adam spreading the passes forward, giving Steven Gerrard a free role would be better for our captain.

Steven Gerrard should be allowed to drift in and out and to dictate the attacking play and stopping quick breakaways, and hence he should have a great season playing where he loves most, attacking midfield. I think the best solution would be for him and Suarez to be given free roles to drop back to receive the ball along with to exploit the open space.

Keep an eye out for the final part when i pick the strikers
