Have Spurs Blown Their Chances Of A Top 4 Finish?

‘5th place is about as good as it’s gonna get’ were the words of Redknapp at the end of last season, despite a 4th place finish the year before.

‘5th place is about as good as it’s gonna get’ were the words of Redknapp at the end of last season, despite a 4th place finish the year before.

Many fans were left bemused, puzzled and, rightfully so, rather angry. Not many tweaks had been made from the year before, in face some argue that squad had been strengthened from the 4th place winning season.

Nonetheless, it could be construed that Redknapp has admitted defeat in the race for a second Champions League gaining season in three years.

While Arsenal appear to have taken a step backwards, Manchester City and Liverpool, two top four rivals in seasons past, have significantly strengthened over the summer, and Man Utd and Chelsea will almost certainly finish in the Champions League places again this year.

The signings if Friedel, Adebayor and Parker have improved certain quarters of the pitch that were in desperate need of a re-vamp while the refusal to sell Modric sends out a serious message of intent to Spurs’ rivals.

But, the defence still looks frail at times, especially with King as injury prone as he is and Gallas sidelined for the foreseeable future, the hopes of the back four rest on Dawson and Kaboul. Surprisingly, a number of the Spurs faithful don’t believe Dawson to be as good as some make out while Kaboul, despite the progress he has made, has shown faults in the games against both Manchester sides.

Bassong, as good as he was in his first season alongside Dawson, has looked a shadow of his former self last year and against Hearts, he was given the run-around by the Scottish sides strike force at times. Coming so close to signing Cahill, but ultimately missing out on the England centre-back, looks to have been a backwards step and he is proving why he is so highly rated by members in the media and football.

His signing would have bolstered the back four significantly and even though reports suggest Spurs will re-open negotiations in January, some feel it may be too late by the time the new year rolls around.

The midfield, however, looks to be up to the standard that could compete with the top four rivals but up front is again where Spurs look light.

Adebayor was a superb signing, let’s face it. But would another striker have been too much to ask? Say, the Togolese forward is caught on the wrong end of a mis-placed tackle and made to spend significant time on the sidelines, Spurs are left with just Defoe and Pavlyuchenko as the only recognised senior strikers.

While Kane and Coulibaly may be biding there time for their chance to shine, a more proven professional may be exactly what Spurs missed out on this summer.

Like Cahill, Spurs missed the opportunity to sign Leandro from Internacional. Now after doing the business on the international stage, the likes of Barcelona and AC Milan are keeping tabs on the young Brazilian.

Yet the ball remains firmly in Spurs court courtesy if the commercial relationship between the two sides, the same relationship that saw Sandro end up at White Hart Lane. Some believe that a deal is arranged already and the striker will arrive in January, something I hope to be true.

In short though, is this squad really capable of landing another Champions League spot this year? That talent is there but the players need to maintain a winning mentality against every team, not just the ‘big four’ or the bottom six.

Our chances are good. We failed in our opening fixtures to the Manchesters. I hope the boys have their mind set in getting all 3 points against Liv.

Way too early to be talking about missing out on fourth! Three good signings in window to the areas we neede to – gk, mid and striker. Yeah cahill would have been nice but not as vital as other three. Liverpool despite spending 80 mil since kennys return are still not as good as us. Only suarez and reina would get in spurs xi.

Too early to say if any of the top 6 teams is out of the race for the top 4 places.

All it takes is a good run of games and United will slip up at some point this season or i’ll be very surprised if their young team perform top level in every game.

City are favourites for the title and if anything Chelsea are fighting the other CL places with Liverpool, arsenal and Spurs

I don’t think they’ll reach anywhere near top 4 or 5. They refused to have a working plan during summer traffers and market and there4 will be at position 8 or 10 by January. EPL is totaly defferent from Spanish legue or Italian and therefore any laziness or carelessnes bear its own fruit. I’m waiting to see the magics of Harry this season.

Sorry to break it to you pal but Arsenal won’t make the Top 4 this year. The squad is too weak, not saying Spurs will either, just saying I’m pretty sure Arsenal won’t…boo hoo x

In the last year Spurs have signed one of the top 3 keepers in the PL, the current PL player of the year, 2 regular starters and scorers for Real Madrid (VDV and Adebayor) and one of the best of Brazil’s new generation (Sandro). And you’re telling me that Liverpool are the ones who have strengthened significantly? As for defensive frailties, I’d take Spurs defensive squad over Pools any day of the week.

Pool are a good side, they have a strong nucleus, but so are Spurs. Just because Pool signed their signings in a short splace of time, it attracted a lot of news. But Spurs signings over the last year have been very impressive. It is well noted that Spurs have terrible injury problems. Sandro and Huddlestone are big losses, VDV and Lennon need to recover qiuickly and CB is a disaster zone with Gallas and Dawson out. However those players will return and when they do, Spurs have some starting XI. A midfield of Modric, Sandro, Parker, Bale, with VDV just off Adebayor, is to die for. A reasonable number of injuries are well covered (Lennon, Hudd, Kranc in reserve). The problem is, currently we ave an uneasonable number of injuries

I’d take Spurs and Arsenal to finish 4th or 5th, Pool 6th. And to the clown above, Stoke somewhere between 15th and 10th.

what a load of frickin drivel.its a well writen article with no actual subject. To write off any squad as strong as spurs after 2games lost to the ‘big 2’, which is basically how it is now and not forgetting they both took more momentum into those games with massive opening wins under theirs belts. You are an idiot my friend, nonetheless I have taken the time to ridicule you, thus giving you the one .ore hit you were looking for to pad out your crap web site stats.

So there you go. Enjoy it.

Try thinking of a valid topic next time champ.

It is unbelievable how many people suddenly think Liverpool have a great squad because they have gone out and spent shed loads of cash.

This summer, Enrique looks like the only good bit of business to me. Henderson is woeful, I wouldn’t have bought him for 4 Million let alone 20. They have brought in a whole new midfield of average players and let their best midfielder go to Chelsea for less than they paid for him a year ago.

They had a weak central defence last season, and have not improved it – and with Carragher (over-rated at his best) now far from the player he once was – they have real problems. Even the genuine threat that Suarez will provide – I can’t see it being enough to ensure the consistency required for a top 5 finish.

I’d be very surprised if the top 5 is not Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.

With the likes of Liverpool, Villa and Stoke battling it out for 6th.

    2 cups and 3rd yeah?

You should pop down to paddy power and stake the house on it. I’m sure the wife and kids won’t mind living in cardboard boxes, after all, liverpool fans wags and kids grow up in them!

Spurs top 4 chances depend on the strikers more than anything.
Just 17 league goals between them last season. Another season like that and they will be lucky to get another Europa place.
But if Spurs strikers can get some form back then they have as good a chance of 4th as either Arsenal or Liverpool this season.
OT and early days but the Manchester clubs are starting to look like the Barca/Madrid of the Premier League ie on another planet.

just to say, with regards to the leandro thing, he signed a new contract, its not like we just kept getting bids nocked back by inter. in terms of position, this year i think there will be two three-way battles at the top of the table. between city, united and chelski for top 3, and between woolwich, spurs and pool for 4th. at the moment can’t decide between pool and spurs for 4th so will go for tottenham on the basis that i support them

Thanks for all the great comments boys. I see your all feeling me and my predictions. Nice one. Spurs are really a crap Arsenal. So we shouldn’t really hate them we should feel sorry for them and their supporters. Like when you see a disabled person on the street you don’t call them a c**t do you or a blind man with a stick. You don’t try to trip him up so come on. Don’t be mean to them be nice. They’ve got feelings too. Goodnight and God Bless x

Mark, your right. Spurs are a crap Arsenal. Spot on. Like the spotty ugly little brother who can’t get a girlfriend and when they get a date they go on and on and on about it (champions League). They never hold on to their dates cos they were pissed at the time and when sober wouldn’t touch them. God, and when they get a shag (beat Arsenal) they think they are some top love gods and go on and on and on. That’s cos they haven’t had a shag in years. So I understand what you’re saying mate they really are just an ugly, spotty, short, small willied brother. We’ve got to train them. Send them to the gym. Bulk em up a bit. Poor little beggars. It must be hard for em. Give em a break. No problem spurs. You’ll win the premiership this year (in a different universe).

(Here we go boys we’ve got one who has commented, now remember be nice to the poor little thing)

Good Morning Stevespur. How are you today? I hope you are well. Stevespur I guess by your name you support Spurs, never mind mate, we all have our crosses to bare. Erm the answer to your question is gonna have to be a no. We didn’t enjoy the 8-2 drubbing that we recieved from United. I’m not sure if you understand football my friend but when you lose it isn’t enjoyable. Maybe you have come to enjoy losing as you do it a lot more than us but it wasn’t an enjoyable game. However, we enjoy playing in the Champions league. Remember that? That’s where Europes best teams play and compete at the highest level. Unfortunately you’ve only been in it once and your not in it this year but you always have the Europa league which you can settle down in your unit and watch on Channel 5 I think it is. That’s 1-2-3-4-5. Ok. take care and remember not to lick dirty windows it may upset your tummy. Toodles

Lol must be comcerned to be producing that kind of response. But then going from last seasons phantom quadruple to struggling to compete with the top three must be difficult to take. No doubt we will see you in the europa once you get knocked out of CL. You know what channel that is on clearly! By the end of the season we will see if arteta, dong and benayoun are enough to keep youin the hunt for those trophies you used to win. Toodles!
