Arsenal interested in Cole, but not his wages!

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed he has an interest in Chelsea’s out of contract midfielder Joe Cole, but feels he may well have enough already in Cole’s position. The fact that Cole will be available on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season makes him an appealing target for not just Arsenal, but clubs such as Manchester United and Tottenham have also been linked with a move.

It is thought that Chelsea are unwilling to meet Cole’s wage demands of £120,000 a week, and if that’s the case, it’s highly unlikely Arsene Wenger is going to break Arsenal’s wage structure and make him their highest paid player at the club. So with that, plus a hefty signing on fee, i just can’t see this one happening. Perhaps Arsene doesn’t know what Cole would be expecting in terms of wages, as he has confirmed he is keeping an eye on his situation.

“Joe Cole is an interesting target, but do I have enough players in those positions? We shall see,” said Wenger in the Daily Star Sunday.

While i agree that we have plenty of the short and tricky winger types, i would still like to see Joe Cole sign for Arsenal. He would provide us with vital squad depth, he’s English and has bags of premiership experience. Would he get in our starting eleven? Not ahead of Arshavin on the left, but he would get in on the right any day.

But i just can’t see this one happening. Although a move across London would be an easy option for him, his wage demands will scupper any deal. This will be Cole’s last big contract and Arsenal are hardly known for being over-generous with their contracts for 29 year olds.
