Liverpool Legend Slams Wenger’s Transfer Activity

Liverpool icon Graeme Souness has questioned Arsene Wenger’s transfer market activity, claiming the Frenchman didn’t buy the right players in the summer.

Arsenal sold Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas this summer and made late moves to sign Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Andre Santos and bring Yossi Benayoun in on loan from Chelsea. Souness doesn’t believe these players are of the required quality to fill the boots of the departed stars, and has called for Wenger to reinvest in the Gunners squad. Souey wrote in his column for the Daily Star Sunday:

“Arsene Wenger said last week that he now has more experience and more leaders in his squad. And his challenge is to prove that he made the right decisions in the last transfer window.

“But going out on the last day of the window to sign players like Per Mertesacker and Mikel Arteta and borrow Yossi Benayoun didn’t seem like a cold, calculating plan to me.

“That wasn’t the astute Arsene Wenger we have known for 15 years. This to me is a pragmatic Arsenal with a business plan which would please their accountants.

“I know we are entering perhaps the most difficult economic climate we have ever known. But Arsenal are a big club who have just generated a lot of money through selling Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

“They had time to bring in replacements and reinvest in the squad. That’s what Arsenal fans wanted to see. They want to see their team winning things and to do that you have to pay fees and wages to attract top players. This is a club at the crossroads – and they have to ensure they take the right road.”

We will never know the truth regarding the transfer window and our last signings. However, logically it certainly didn’t look like carefully calculated buys, far from it.

they spent an awful lot on mediocre players like downing, henderson and carroll.

henderson and carroll managed 1 goal in 8 games and 0 assists each. downing managed 0 goals and 0 assists. Together these underperformer cost 82mio. euros.

this turd should adress the madness in his own club first!!!

still Arsenal needs a players which can help the team to become a strong. but i advised arsen wenger to buy a big player not a young player, i like kaka, rossi, jonh matter and so on talented player arsenal need now which can use there experience when there are playing football they can bring a result in time. thanks

I agree with assessment above. The activity was panick buy which was not necessary since we had known it for ages. OK, you say he trusted the French kid to stay but was’nt Flaminis departure for free caused by such naivety?

Yesterday we saw our team reliance on the Van Persie who is not reliable in terms of durability. He is due an injury soon- Then What, another panick buy?

Midfielders we have are nowhere near what we lost so lets take out the wallet and buy big players 3 to be precise: Midfielder, defender and a Forward.

you can buy all the big names you like for however much and pay them the world, it Will not guarantee trophies and if the said player is influential in Arsenal colours he Will be tapped up anyway by man city, chelski,Madrid ot Barca and we Will be back to square one.So what’s the point? they did it with vieira, pettit, overmars, reyes,Henry, flaming and hleb.As soon as we get a steady title winning squad the vultures circle. Now how many of these players were big names before Arsenal? Will you experts(so called) shut it?

Big teams(with lots of money) take Arsenal players because they pay good money and the players were very good at Arsenal.Paying big money doesn’t guarante you trophy as it is the case at Liverpool and Totenham who has spent much more than Arsenal for few years.
Can anyone tell me if any big team in Europe interested to buy Rooney or other over rated players by the media?
But this same media or so called experts like Graeme Souness tell us the players at Arsenal are not good enough. I doubt sometimes if they understand the football Arsenal is playing, maybe it is French for them to understand.

Wenger made strategic buys in order to buy time and limit damage.

All the clubs knew Arsenal had money to spend and raised prices. Wenger let the speculation go and bought good players while he is attempting to get better ones.

    Arteta good midfielder, great price.
Mertesacker, great defender (yes a bit slow, but he has been visibly improving and his positioning makes up for his speed). Santos, can’t say yet because we barely saw him, but he did well against Olympiakos. Ben Ayoun, LOAN, filler spot for an experience midfield while he finds a long term prospect and Gervinho and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain are excellent long term purchases at great prices.

    Mr. Souness is a moron.

Graeme is 100% correct, wenger and the board will continue robbing the fans as long as the fans continue to tolerate it, which won’t be long.

Strategic buys? Hahahahaaa, good one – tell us all how no cl football is in the club’s strategic interests.

wenger played it clever, arteta was a short term replacement for fabregas, benayoun is a short term replacemnt for nasri, they are both very experienced and premiership proven, mertesacker was desperately needed, hes a great buy in my opinion, he is a real leader with so much experience, jenkinson and AOC are ones for the future, they have great potential, gervinho was very important to lille’s success last year, thierry henry has praised gervinho and his abillities so i dont need to say much more about him, i believe with verminator and wilshere back in the team we really have a strong squad.

the player im most excited about is RYO mayaichi and he hasnt even played much yet, people have nicknamed him RYODINHO, just watch out for this KID 🙂

lol i forgot to mention andre santos who looks like a better upgrade to clichy, santos has skills and he scores goals, park chu young is full of energy and scores goals for fun, im sure park is a cover for RVP.

considering all this has wenger really panick bought ???????????????

i think he played it very clever with options he had, he has january to furthur improve the squad and i hope he does. UP GUNNERZ
