Former Midfielder – ‘Fernando Torres Not Worth £1m’

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has blasted the form of Fernando Torres, claiming the striker looks like he isn’t even worth £1m.

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has blasted the form of Fernando Torres, claiming the striker looks like he isn’t even worth £1m.

Townsend made 110 appearances for Chelsea during a 3 year spell in the yearly 90’s but used his column in the Daily Mail to hit out the clubs current No.,9, Torres. The Spaniard’s troubles at Stamford Bridge have been well documented, after struggling to live up to his British transfer record fee of £50m following his move from Liverpool last year.

The 27-year-old has managed only 3 goals so far in 24 appearances for Chelsea and Townsend didn’t hold back with his criticism, labelling his poor form as a “nightmare that doesn’t seem to end” and claiming the striker doesn’t look like he’s worth £1m never mind £50m:

“When I look at him, I see another Roman Pavlyuchenko – a striker who knows he is fourth choice and who looks as if he would rather be anywhere else.

“There is no nuisance value in Torres. He doesn’t rattle the centre half, chase lost causes into the corner, crash into the first row of seats after running down the full back. He’s not scoring, so what does he give the team?

“You feel like watching his matches from behind the sofa; it’s the nightmare that doesn’t seem to end.

“If he was a £1million player going through this ordeal, you might think he’s not worth £1m with the way he is playing. But this is the British record transfer signing, at £50m.”

Its shocking how the press slates Torres left right and centre. How many chances ever since he came to Chelsea has he squandered and how many one on ones has he got.Can that be said of rvp or Gomes who have chances in the box in abundance.

Chelsea’s 2011-2012 squad is poor.Chelsea has no wide player. It lacks a real creative hub in the middle of the park.

Is Lampard, Terry still Chelsea of yesteryear quality? No. Of the strikers at Chelsea who is scoring then? None? Why? Poor ball distribution. Throw in Torres at the Lane and Emirates where they have a robust midfield and see if he cannot notch in goals in double figures.

Why Chelsea of Jose was succesful its because of the manpower that he had. Wide men( Robben, Duff, SWP, cOLE)2011-(malouda?kalou?)

2006 cHELSEA had MAKELELE and a young LAMPARD.iN 2011 does he still has the legs?no he should player for other smaller teams Chelsea need younger players and Torres is not the problem. The problems where there before and the cause is decline in some untouchables speed and stamina.

I totally agree. Chelsea have underpar past their prime players and do not and cannot play to Torres’s strengths. I’d say Torres would score loads given the proper service.

Can’t believe how sentimental some people can be, it seems as if everyone has forgotten Liverpools frustration with judas during the last year and a bit, even Harry Reddnapp cridicised his effort during that time. Well, I guess the emotional ones among us could argue he wasnt happy and had problems with the running of the club. Although, Jamie carra made it clear that players are not effected with things of such once the game is on. But let’s just say he was effected and his performance suffered
As a result, what argument or defense is there for his poor showing with Spain? Surely Chelseas midfielders can’t be the blame! He is an over the hill player and Roman did not know what he was doing when paying 50 mill. Now that’s an end to this

Unfortunately Townsend is so thick that he can’t see the bigger picture. Chelsea is not the team for Torres – there are too many slow-headed players who are not sharp enough to notice Torres’ great movement until it is too late. Bond, above, is correct. Torres would be prolific at Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool. Not so sure about Man City – they can be too Italian, but they do have Yaya and Silva.

At last somebody has said what needs saying, well done Andy.

Everybody wants to wrap Torres up in cotton wool and make excuses for him.

AVB should give him a rollocking and tell him to get his head up and start working for the team!

What a load of rubbish. Fernando Torres is a world class player. Its just those under par past their prime oldies at Stamford Bridge who aren’t up to scratch. Give him the ball on the shoulder of the last defender and exept him from defensive duties and he’ll score goals galore. I was gutted when he left and still feel a pang whenever I see Torres wearing the Blue of Chelsea. I’d bring him back if that was possible and pair him upfront with Luis Suarez. Together they’ll tear apart any defence. But I know its not gonna happen. Torres could have gone to Serie A or returned to La Liga but unfortunately he moved to Chelsea to win trophies. That ain’t happening either. SHAME

He would have been better off with Liverpool today. But, he jumped ship for glory. He was never a Red.

Anyone thought of the chances of Torres, being a true red, and realizing he can’t provide the same world class service that he once used to, decided to do liverpool a favor worth £50m?

Torres is CRAP … He has lost 2-3 yards of pace and will NEVER be the player he was at Liverpool.
He is to one dimentianal and cannot adapt his game play to drop deep for the team. He can’t chase lost causes anymore because of his loss of pace… He will only thrive in a team that is built to do all the work for him and give him a killer pass.
Liverpool had the best out of him and it reminds me of Michael Owen…. Once they left Liverpool for a so called BIGGER CLUB…. They fail, and dissapear of the face of world football and on to the scrap heap. I wouldn’t want him back at Liverpool as he is a lazy Spanish spoilet kid. Sulk sulk sulk … Chelsea should get rid of him and many other Chelsea players should go to.
Torres wishes he never left Liverpool and I do too.
But he burnt his bridges with Kenny and the team and left us in the lurch just when we were coing right. He said he was going to a bigger club …. ???? Strange that because we have beaten them at there place 3 times this year !!! Liverpool have moved on …. The fans can only dream what could have been, yet realise it would never work out now as to much water has passed under the bridge.
On your own Chelsea and I couldn’t give a monkeys!!!
My interest is Liverpool Football club and the direction in which they are going now.
It’s looking GREAT for Liverpool and Kenny is building something VERY SPECIAL and it will last for many many years.

Torres was a good player at liverpool. But at chelsea he has completely lost his form and as a result is warming the bench. He shouldnt have left liverpool at a time when the team was regrouping
