International forward committed to Liverpool move

June 13, 2010 - Pretoria, South Africa - epa02199743 Serbia

By Peter Jacobs.

Departing Standard Liege forward Milan Jovanovic yesterday confirmed he is set to join Liverpool, despite Rafa Benitez leaving the club. Benitez was the man responsible for bringing the six foot left winger to the Premiership, but speculation has grown since the Spaniards departure from Merseyside.

There were rumours of Benitez trying to ambush the deal and bring him to Italy with Inter Milan, as his contract expires with Standard Leige on 30th June. However, the 29 year-old Serbian was quoted by Belgian newspaper Sporza,

‘I will not break the contract (with Liverpool) because Benitez has left’.

Liverpool have not yet confirmed a deal but it is the strongest indication yet that he will be the first summer signing for the Reds. Jovanovic is a versatile forward who can play on the wing or as a supporting striker. With the reported departure of left wingers of Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun, Jovanovic could have an important role next season as a wide midfielder.

With copious amounts of other reports linking players away from Anfield, the imminent arrival of an experienced international forward is welcome news for the fans. Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby has been reported in saying what an ‘excellent’ signing he could be.

‘He’s got real pace and he’ll be an excellent signing if we get him.

‘There is much more to come from him [in the World Cup]’ He told Liverpool’s official club website.

Jovanovic is currently playing for his native Serbia in the World Cup and has started both of their Group D fixtures. He was also on the score sheet in their second match against group favourites Germany.

What do you think of the Jovanovic signing?

haven’t seen an awful lot of him, but from what i have seen, the lad looks very useful! he’s free so certainly well worth the gamble, couldn’t be any worse than vorinin could he?

this is a dream come true!!! what a signing. With him in our team, we can now fight for the 10th place with stoke city with confidence. Stoke City should be very afraid indeed. It is a great signing. The kind of signing Stoke City would be proud of and fearful of. Wow!!! Just watch the way he played though he scored against germany. what a player … stoke city watch out.

I think the guy has all the qualities to make it in the Prem. lf he settles in the UK and actually plays he will be a success.

Superb! We missed a good target man, a cover for Torres. Ngog is too inexperienced. He would be a good option

He is good but he lack of stamina. He must get somemore tough if he want to survive in BPL. Get down too easy. Donavan from US is good partner for Torres.

Gesh, i bet Chelsea & Man U will be quaking in their boots at the announcement of this signing………..NOT!

This guy has been playing in the ‘not so mighty’ Belgian League for the past 4 years so how good could he be???

Unless he is a late bloomer ala Ian Wright or Diego Milito, i dont see how this guy can make much of a difference.
