Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has told Arsenal.com that he expects the club to sign a defender soon. The Gunners have been linked with several defenders over the last few weeks as we look set to lose at least 3 centre-backs from last years squad, with Phillippe Senderos already left for Fulham and William Gallas, Mikel Silvestre and Sol Campbell all yet to agree new deals.

Wenger announced last week that he was aiming to complete a defensive signing before the end of the World Cup but refused to name who his No.1 target was. Several media outlets are claiming Lorient defender Laurent Koscienly is on the verge of moving to North London, and a possible delay being down to Wenger forgetting his Blackberry!

Now Arsene has once again reiterated his desire to tie-up a new defender in the coming days.

“Nothing has been done yet but I expect something will be done quite soon on that front, on the defensive front. We will sign a player soon,” Wenger told Arsenal.com this week.

“But we do not want to come out with names before we announce it.

“Keep faith in what has always worked well for us and that is to keep it secret as much as we can.”

It seems highly likely the player in question will in fact be Koscienly with the players agent confirming a deal is close. The question will then be…who next? Surely one relatively unproven 24-year-old isn’t going to fill the gap left by 3 highly experienced centre-backs?
