Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that record signing Dimitar Berbatov could leave Old Trafford this summer in search of first team football.

Berbatov joined the Red Devils for £30.75m (source: Sky Sports) in 2008 and despite being the Premier League’s top scorer last season, he has failed to secure a regular first team place in Sir Alex’s team this campaign.

Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez are all ahead of him in the pecking order, and 31-year-old Berbatov is wanting regular first team football as he enters the twilight years of his career.

Quoted on Sky Sports News, here is what Fergie had to say:

“His concern is not getting first-team football,” said Ferguson. “At 31, he is looking at first-team football.

“It is difficult for me to guarantee that, so it could lead to him looking elsewhere.”

Berbatov’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season but Ferguson went on to confirm that United will look to trigger a one-year extension clause. This will mean they will be able to command a fee for the Bulgarian and avoid losing him for nothing.

“We will be taking up the option on his contract but, having had chats with him, I understand he wants to get first-team football,” said Ferguson.

“It is something we need to consider at the end of the season. For a player of his age and his ability, it is disappointing for him that he is not getting first-team football.

“We will look at the end of the season but until then, he remains at United.”
