Mexican striker set for United switch?

Mexico

By Ryan Kane.

Fans on the Manchester United official website have speculated that Mexican striker Pablo Barrera may sign for the club in the coming weeks.

The 23-year old speed demon had been linked with a £3m move to West Ham United this summer, however its is expected the player will wait to see if bigger clubs such as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are willing to bid for him before he makes a decision on his future. According to reports West Ham were said to have negotiated a deal for the striker in May of this year, only for Barrera’s impressive World Cup performances to attract the interest of bigger, more renowned English clubs. This seemingly caused him to reconsider a move to Upton Park.

The striker who currently ply’s his trade at Mexican side UNAM Puma’s has scored 3 goals in 24 games for the national side and was part of the CONCACAF Gold Cup winning side in 2009.Barrera won a penalty in Mexico’s 2-0 win over France in this summer’s World Cup after a dazzling run inside from the right saw the youngster skip past United’s Patrice Evra before being chopped down illicitly inside the “Les Blues” penalty area. Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, who signed for the Red Devil’s earlier in the summer, scored in the same match as France’s dismal World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end.

Fans on the “Fanzone” section of United’s official website praised Barrera following impressive shows in South Africa. One fan “reddevil_777” stating that the Mexican would be

“perfect on the left-wing and a good long term replacement for Ryan Giggs”.

before going on to add that the UNAM striker would be

“a valuable addition to the squad”.

It is expected that United and Tottenham will have to shell out in the region of £4 – £6 million for the services of the 23-year old, a raised asking price as a result of the striker’s notable showing at the World Cup. Barrera’s Mexico side were dumped from the competition in the second round by Diego Marardona’s Argentina. Fellow countryman Javier Hernandez has already made the switch to Old Trafford, joining United in April of this year for an undisclosed fee.

Will Barrera join fellow Mexican Hernandez at Old Trafford next season?
