Robin van Persie 2

Arsenal are bracing themselves for a £40m bid from Real Madrid for striker Robin van Persie, according to the Daily Star.

As most Gooners will be aware by now, van Persie will enter the final year of his contract this summer and despite Arsenal’s attempts to open negotiations several months ago, the 28-year-old decided to delay talks until this summer prompting speculation that he could be set to leave the Emirates.

The Daily Star report today that Spanish giants Real Madrid will test the Gunners resolve by launching a £40m offer for the Dutchman this summer, and will fund the move by selling Argentine Gonzalo Higuain.

Arsenal are determined to keep hold of the recently crowned PFA and FWA player of the year and have hinted they may force him to run down the final year of his contract should he refuse to sign an extension. However, if Madrid come in with a bid of £40m it would be extremely difficult for the Arsenal hierarchy to turn down.

Should Arsenal sell if RVP refuses to extend his deal and Real Madrid offer £40m? Probably, yes. It’s never wise to keep a player who isn’t committed to the club and £40m would be an excellent return for a player who will soon turn 29. However, i personally think van Persie will sign an extension at the end of the season and stay at the Emirates.
