Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed he is desperate to join Tottenham this summer, despite interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Belgian stopper will enter the final year of his contract this summer and has made it clear he wont be signing an extension, paving the way for a summer move away from the newly-crowned Dutch champions.

The Mirror reported on Monday that Manchester United had made a last ditch move to try and snare the Ajax captain from under the noses of Arsenal, who were believed to be edging ahead of Tottenham to his signature.

However, the player has been quoted today by Goal.com as saying his preferred destination is in fact Spurs and the 25-year-old is eager for the two clubs to agree a deal as quickly as possible.

Vertonghen described Tottenham as his “favourite” club and claims that Ajax’s valuation of him is holding up the deal. He also praised the tradition of the North Londoners and suggested it was the clubs transfer policy of buying young offensive minded players that appeals to him. Here is what Vertonghen is quoted as saying by Goal.com:

“Tottenham are absolutely my favourite.[But] the Ajax board are asking for a very big amount for a player whose contract is running out in year.

“I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will soon reach an agreement.”

“I owe much to Ajax, but I’ve always given my whole heart and soul to the club,” Vertonghen continued.

“My appreciation for the club and the fans is great. It would be terrible if my farewell is marred or distorted because Ajax [are stubborn] with the asking price.

“Of course I want Ajax to gain financially, but the amount that Tottenham want to pay, I think – perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable.

“Next year I can leave for free. I hope that this awareness is there, because a transfer lingering for weeks like Maarten Stekelenburg’s [to Roma] seems very harsh.

“He joined at the end of Roma’s preparation [for the new season]. I want to be able to blend in with the other players at Spurs from the start [of pre-season training].”

“Tottenham is a fantastic football club that has the tradition I want,” he explained.

“Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs is already very close nearby. They buy young, eager, offensive-minded players.”
