Arsenal Ready To Snatch Vertonghen From Under Tottenham’s Noses?

By on May 9, 2012

With the summer transfer window set to open soon, we’ll aim to keep you up-to-date on all the latest transfer news. Today sees Arsenal and Tottenham fight over the Ajax captain.

Jan-Vertonghen

Target - Vertonghen

Arsenal are set to make a late bid to sign Tottenham-bound defender Jan Vertonghen, according to talkSPORT.

Vertonghen is set to enter the final year of his Ajax contract this summer and has made it clear he won’t be signing an extension, despite leading the Dutch giants to the Eredivisie title this season.

Widespread reports on Tuesday claimed that the Ajax captain was set for a move to Tottenham after being quoted by several media outlets as saying Spurs were his preferred destination and he was keen for the two clubs to agree a deal. Goal.com quoted the player as saying:

“Tottenham are absolutely my favourite.

“I trust that both Tottenham and Ajax will put some water in the wine and they will soon reach an agreement.”

“Of course I want Ajax to gain financially, but the amount that Tottenham want to pay, I think – perhaps with a little extra – is very reasonable.

“Tottenham is a fantastic football club that has the tradition I want,” he explained.

“Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs is already very close nearby. They buy young, eager, offensive-minded players.”

However, talkSPORT are now claiming that Arsenal haven’t given up hope yet and aren’t ready to let Jan Vertonghen move to Tottenham without a fight.

The report suggests Arsene Wenger will try to hijack Tottenham’s move for the 25-year-old and the Belgian stopper will be open to a move to the Emirates as long as he’s promised first team football.

I always thought there was a long way to go in the Vertonghen transfer saga and talks over an immanent move to White Hart Lane were a little premature. The player has made several noises in recent months about his future, but one thing that seems clear is that first team football is vital for the lad.

Arsene Wenger already has Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker (when fit) fighting it out for the two centre back places, so unless the Frenchman plans to utilise Vertonghen at left back, i really can’t see him being guaranteed first team football at the Emirates.

Tottenham on the other hand are desperate for a long-term replacement for Ledley King. Younes Kaboul has been excellent this season and is almost certain to start, but William Gallas is the wrong side of 30 and picking up niggling injuries while Michael Dawson has suffered two serious injuries within the last 2 years, so a reliable partner for Kaboul is required.

So based on the chances of playing in his preferred centre back position week-in week-out, Tottenham still seem the most likely destination.

One minute he loves arsenal then the next he wants a move to spurs? he’s a versatile player but maybe a little injury prone aswell, which is the last thing arsenal need we need with the injury prone mertersacker and vermaelen. He does though seem to be in the arsenal mould of qaulity but i would assume spurs to be in the driving seat as they would be able to offer him more first team action.

Incorrect. A journalist wants to make a name for himself so makes up quotes then all the other “sources” quote the same made up story. Evening Standard doing the same with M’Vila now. Both will be at Arsenal next season.

He has concentration issues. Besides, he wants to play for Spurs now so there isn’t much point in hoping he comes to Arsenal.

Anyway I don’t think we need a centre back right now. Koscielny and Vermaelen with Mertesacker as back-up are good enough. What we need is an experienced left back and cover for Sagna. Jenkinson should go on a loan. A defensive midfielder would also be good as we are too reliant on Arteta. We haven’t won a game without Arteta this season and that’s probably down to the fact that other players have not been solid enough at the back without him.

We got Podolski. If we get M’vila, a good attacking midfielder (not sure how good Hoilett is), a GK to cover Szczesny and keep RVP, then we are pretty much ready to go for the title next season. Even then, beating City to the title will be very hard. The likes of Yaya Toure (reminds me of Vieira) can win you titles!

m’vila is a defnsive midfielder.. only 21, 1 of the best there is! he is a mix between viera and makalele.. just the sorta bloke who would sit infront of the cb’s, break up play, retrieve balls, make nice passes forward. just what we need! he does get forward but is defensive minded and rarely gets caught out, good cover seeing as vermaelen does tend to roam forward and gets caught short alot. and song also is more prone to leave his position exsposing the back so m’vila would be the 1, to plug gaps

It’s vital that Arsenal should try their utmost to recruit Vertonghen. With Arsenal’s record of persistent injuries, and an extremely versatile player like him at a cut rate price would be inexcusable not to bye.

Arsenal should sign this player, maybe he could form a good partnership with his Belgian teammate The Verminator and solve the ever present Arsenal defense problem.

we dont relly need the guy.we dont even need a midfielder. imagine rosisky, arteta, songinho, jack wilshere and ramsey fighting for a 3 men or 2 men cental midfield. then in wings we should have the OX,theo, gervinho[he will improve],ryodinho miyachi and benayoun[hopefilly we sign him].VANDOLSKI up front…we can beat any team to win the league title.

no we didn’t cos JW19 never played a game this season…and did diaby. dat said, i think we need M’villa and not Vertonghen

we do need the guy, or a similar player of his calibre. vermaelen is great, koschielny has had a good season but hes not the best, there is better and if we want to be serious about competeing then we need world class at the back.. would koschielny get in united’s or city’s team? bring in vertonghen, him n vermaelen would partner well, koschielny n mertasacker for strength in depth. we need about 4-5 world class proven players, poldolski n m’vila (hopefully) is a great start, need a forward, a back up keeper and a full back still.. atleast

if a centre back is really required, then one with lots of premier league experience would be a good one. look at koscielny and mertesacker – they all need 1 season to adapt to english football. vertonghen will be the same

i disagree when you say koscielny is not the best. yes he wouldn’t get into the city or united team, but he’s easily our best defender at the moment. if you notice, vermaelen hasn’t been consistent lately (since the AC Milan first leg if i recall). koscielny hardly makes an error these days and the goal saving tackles he makes, makes me wonder whether Koscielny and Vermaelen switched bodies!

I think you underate koscielny. he has been great this season, better than vermaelen i think. getting called to the french national team for the euros is creditable. anyways, i think a CDM and a striker should be our priorities. we need cover for van persie and podolski. defensively the team is not perfect but should be fine. Anyways if m’vila arrives we have song who can play CB, so lots of options. coquelin deputised for sagna nicely…i think he and jenkinson should be trusted this season. If Le boss thinks he still needs more players, i think he will sign them. we need to clear the extra players. we have too many unused strikers…lets see!!…always a gunner!!!

Perhaps you’ll print this. Since when has TalkSPORT been considered anything other than an agitator? Spurs have been linked to every Tom, Dick and Harry according to certain low class no class rags, 99.9% of which is total bunk and talkSPORT isnt much different with their opinions. If Spurs are really interested in signing Vertonghen, then they will get him it’s as simple as that. Some idiots seem to think that Spurs are a poor club because Daniel Levy refuses to pay over the odds for players he considers unworthy however, very rarely does he miss out on a player they are sure about. It remains to be seen if the Vertonghen deal come to fruition, we shall see. But I bet that if it does, the same idiots who want him at the Arse, will be bad mouthing the guy for joining Spurs, apparently, the club HE prefers to join according to the Dutch press.

Do you all seriously think that between Kos, Per and Verm that we dont need quality in the CB department then we should except abject failure next season. its not our lack of goals that has lost us trophies is the lack of discipline defensively (the whole team) with the addition of Lukas i think we need M’villa, a centre half and a full back

I would love to see a TV-5 + VERTONGHEN partnership, backed up by KOSCIENLY & perharps MERT.With this no need for any more fulbacks.

We don’t need him as good as he is Arsene didn’t promise him first team football since he knows he has a gem in koscielny and vermelen is the vice captain that probably didn’t sit well with vertoghen and spurs seem a better option since he can start at cb right away .but make no mistake arsenal were the first to contact Ajax and they were his first choice.as much as I like him I just can’t have koscielny on the bench kid is becoming one of the best Central defenders in the premier league even world ,its a matter of time before real, barca, start talking about him .

I think one of arsenal’s major problem is lack of wining mentality,so in my opinion,i think a player of vent.’s calibre would be a perfect signing 4 arnal.wenger should learn 4rm past mistakes.looking at arsnal’s injury history, u would kn dat we stil need some reasonable recruitment. Pls wenger enough of dis trophless seasons. Up v.p

I think he is doing all this to improve his PR !! A higher PR might get him and ajax more money as more clubs might be interested. We saw hazard doing the same thing.

As an Arsenal Fan – i really would like vertonghen in the squad for next year! I hope wenger doesnt hold out for the money like he did fo cahill. If we had cahill we wouldnt need to buy vertonghen …… all we can do is sit back and see what happens

Ee don’t need vertonghen we need mertesacker in form m Vila would be good though not necessary what are necessary are new full backs as sagna will never be the right back he once was and I’m not to keen on Gibbs he doesn’t have enough experience and gets caught out of position too much

Attn arsenal….RVP will leave your trophyless club and begin the exodus, this year be thankful for your league position ATM, Thfc are the pride of nth London and we will sign him , coz like most people he prefers spurs over gooners, and get use to it in the future, this weekend I hope mr hodgson sorts u right out, COYS!!!

Look, it’s as obvious as this. He will join the club that comes in third this season. If AFC do then RVP stays and also Modric leaves THFC for CFC (esp if THFC lose CL place to CFC as the CL winners) so joining AFC would be a no brainer. If THFC get 3rd then Modric stays, and THFC attract other players. For my money AFC getting 3rd is more likely so they get Vertonghen…

NO GUNNERS!DONT CRY FOR VERTOGEN. HE IS NOT EVEN SELECTED FOR CENTRAL POSITION IN THE BELGIUM NATIONAL TEAM.KOMPANY&VERMINATOR ARE PREFERRED. THOSE WHO SAY KOSCLIENY CANT MAKE IT IN THE CITY/UNITED SHIRT, YOU MUST BE JOKING.ARE TELLING ME THAT EVANS, JONES, SMALLING, LESCOTT, KOLO & THE AGEING RIO ARE BETTER THAN KOS? IF ITS TRUE THEN WE WERE WATCHING TWO DIFFERENT LEAGUES.ARSENAL ARE GOOD & DONT HAVE TO ADD ANY PLAYER.KEEPING THE SAME TEAM & CORRECTING PREVIOUS MISTAKES IS GOOD TO LAND THE LEAGUE. I MEAN WE DONT HAVE TO SIGN SO CALLED WORLD CLASS PLAYERS IN ORDER TO BEAT QPR, BLACKBURN, SWANSELONA, FULHAM,NORWICH etc.WE ARE GOOD ENOUGH TO BEAT THEM WITH THE CURRENT TEAM.WE DIDNT WIN THE LEAGUE BECOZ WE LOST TO MAN U OR CITY BUT TO THESE AVERAGE TEAMS.HONESTLY I DONT SEE WHERE WENGER CAN FIT ANY OTHER PLAYER IN, MAYBE A CERTAIN LEO MESSI OR CR7.
