Manchester United will look to keep alive their slim hopes of retaining their Premier League title, as they take on Sunderland on Sunday.

United trail rivals Man City on goal difference going into the final game of the season and victory for Roberto Mancini’s men over QPR at the Etihad will almost certainly secure their first title in 44 years, as it would leave the Reds needing to overturn at least a 9-goal gap against Sunderland to snatch the title.

All Sir Alex Ferguson’s side can do is put in a professional display and beat Sunderland, then hope for former United ace Mark Hughes to cause an upset against City.

Martin O’Neill’s side go into the game in poor form, failing to win any of their previous seven games, but a win could secure a top 10 finish which would be regarded as a huge success given the start they made this season.

Team news

Sunderland have no fresh injury concerns going into the game. Former United defender Wes Brown is back in training following a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury, but it’s unlikely he will take any part.

Titus Bramble is back in the squad but Sebastien Larsson and Kieran Richardson are both out.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Chris Smalling is out with a groin injury, and the defender will now miss this summers European Championships.

Jonny Evans missed last weeks win over Swansea and is unlikely to return in time to face Sunderland, so Phil Jones is almost certain to come in and play alongside Rio Ferdinand.

Javier Hernandez is expected to continue alongside Wayne Rooney up front with Danny Welbeck still sidelined with an ankle complaint, but the striker is on course to be fit for the Euro’s.

Predicted Score

Sir Alex and Man Utd are vastly experienced at dealing with these types of situations. They have been there and done it and i can’t see anything other than a United win on Sunday, then they will just have to hope for a favour from QPR. Sunderland 0-2 Man Utd.
