Vertonghen – Arsenal Still A Possibility
Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen has claimed a move to Arsenal is a possibility after admitting Tottenham and Ajax are struggling to agree a deal for his services
Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen has admitted a move to Arsenal remains a possibility, but only if his move to Tottenham falls through, according to Sky Sports News.
Vertonghen has enjoyed an excellent season in Holland, winning the Eredivisie title and being named as the leagues Player of the Year. However, with just over a year to run on his contract, he has made it clear he won’t be signing an extension and Ajax are willing to cash in now to avoid losing their captain for nothing next summer.
Both Arsenal and Tottenham are vying for his signature and the Belgian stopper has confirmed Spurs are his preferred destination after being shown around the clubs facilities and meeting with chairmen Daniel Levy in Amsterdam earlier this week.
Vertonghen is keen for the two clubs to agree a deal but claims that Ajax are demanding €15million (£12.5m), which may be difficult for Tottenham to match after missing out on champions league football next term.
The 25-year-old is willing to run down the final year of his contract but admits that Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal are still in the hunt for his services and they remain a possibility if a move to White Hart Lane can’t be agreed.
“I’ve said repeatedly that Tottenham are my first choice, but the talks haven’t progressed,”
“They have shown me around, I have met all their key people and their chairman came to meet me on Monday.
“But Arsenal want me too. They remain a possibility if my Spurs move falls through, as Ajax are asking €15m for me. That is a lot of money for someone with just a year left on his contract.
“I’m sure Spurs won’t be able to pay that much after they missed out on the Champions League.
“Ajax want to get as much as they can for me, while Spurs want to pay as little as possible.
“I hope a deal can be done. But I won’t fight with Ajax, that is the last thing I’d want after so many good years with them.
“England is my preferred destination. But if needed I will see out my contract and leave on a free transfer next year.”
The centre-back is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
